Hi,

I posted this as part of my recent thread on radiator issues - but thought worth putting it under a separate heading to try and get an answer.

I've replaced the head gasket but having an issue with a fuel injector. It didn't seat properly and I discovered when I pulled it out again and felt down in the hole that I'd missed a copper washer. Seems there were two on the injector body but I had only removed one. When I re fitted it, I obviously bent the washer that had remained in, making the injector not seat properly.

So when I started it up I had exhaust gases escaping out around the injector and a very noisy motor! Both washers damaged so getting some new ones this week.

Surprised there were two washers. Anyone know if this is correct? Should there be one or two? The parts diagram only shows one, which it calls an adjusting washer. Just lists one under Quantity as well. Part number TS4100.19.120

Thanks

Mark

My chinese tractor has one per injector-

Sometimes when the washers get re used a ridge can be present were it formed between the injector nozzle and the injector hole in the head, start moving them around or get two stacked and somehow bent like happened to you and a leak happens.

It is pretty much accepted procedure to replace the washer if the injector has been removed.

Also when your new one(s) get there check the thickness against the old one- my guess is the new one will be thicker , with age and multiple uses the washer gets flattened out which reduces its ability to do its job.. Also make sure the injector hole is squeaky clean at the bottom before re-assembly.

good luck  and hope this is helpful

One washer per injector. Almost all diesel engines use a form of sealing or "crush" washer. Some are aluminum, some are copper, but they are all soft to allow conformation to the mating surfaces. The injector seat and the injector bore in the cylinder head must be absolutely clean in order to permit a good seal. Since they are deformed and slightly annealed during use, they should be replaced every time.

Many thanks for your thoughts.

I will try it with one washer and hope it seals.

Thanks

You should check to see if the copper washer is hard or soft. If too hard form production process, it may not seal properly. I always anneal copper washers by heating to red heat and then quenching in cold water. This makes the copper really soft and allows for better seal between injector and pocket.
