Recently helped someone spread some gravel. He thanked me by bringing a 55gal plastic drum filled with off road diesel. Had a hand pump for a drum but it has different threads and a slightly smaller size than the plastic drum. Anyone know of a source for a converter? Haven't had a lot of luck locally. Any problems with diesel in a plastic drum?

Thanks
Glenn

Glenn, no problem with a plastic drum; that's what I use. Mine has two different size plugs and threads, so the pump will screw into one, but would not into the other. I don't know where you could get an adapter.

Glenn,
Metal barrel I found out over the years seem to build a lot of moisture during cold and warm weather, /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif also debris floating around plus settle on the bottom....good way to plug a fuel filter. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Bird is right...go plastic. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Have you try a major plumbing supplier who sells plastic barrels?

I found a distributer here in NJ that has blue colored 55 gal polydrum w/2 2" bungs and closed lid(no lid) for $44. Sounds like a good size for my needs as I will be using enough to keep the fuel fresh.
Problem is that every fuel oil company I just called has a 150 gal minimum.

Rich,
$44? They have them here for $10. Also as far as the 150 gallon minimum is that delivered? If it is you can just go down to the fuel station and fill your tank and then bring it home and unload it. Do you have a loader? If not you can use a plank and roll it off the back of a pickup.

The blue color means it is a potable water drum. You can get one not for water use for a lot less.

Bird,

Where did you get the pump? I've got an unlimited supply of free blue drums that had ethanol in them...still usually have a bit, which is good for various uses...but no pump so far. I cut one drum in half lengthwise to use for mixing concrete. Put a plastic faucet in another one to use in a drip irrigation system. 55 gal of diesel would probably do me all year, but the way it has fluctuated in price lately inspires me to get a supply.

Chuck, I've just got a cheap lever action barrel pump that I bought at Gebo's (for those who aren't familiar with Gebo's, they're much like Tractor Supply Co.) and Tractor Supply Co., Northern Tool, and probably lots of other places have about the same thing for less than $25.

Ten bucks is better than $44. Is that $10 for a new or used drum? The 150 gal min is for delivered.
I used to get free steel drums but drove by the company and they are gone.
