I finally told the wife about the new tractor on Christmas morning. The peace, love and joy we were sharing suddenly disappeared and things got very frosty. Even the diamond earings I got her wouldn't break the ice.
Guess I'll start ragging on her about what her horse costs a month. Or maybe let her hand shovel out our 1,200 ft. driveway.
Oh to be single again.

MP before you "spring" the news you must really "develop" the "surprise". I know when I am in the clear after all the histrionics, when wifey says- "Why did I know that you were going to do that." ;)

PS: This took a long, long time to figure out (37 years).

Seems like that is the normal reaction. Women don't seem to understand the work that is involved in maintaining a property because you usually just do it and it's done! Making it easier, faster and more efficient doesn't even enter the picture because you already do it and it can't be that difficult can it? My wfe said I can have whatever tractor I want, but I have to save my own money for it. Ok, deal. I'm almost half way there, another year to go. Only problem is what I want to get seems to keep getting more expensive with more features, and bigger. If your's is delivered for Christmas, you're way ahead of me. She'll get over it, and the things that you have put off that are suddenly finished will make it more acceptable. Our wonderful ladies forgive these kinds of things pretty quickly.

Spreadsheets and PowerPoint Slides.
Total up the costs per year of all the stuff you currently pay someone else to do, then compare with total cost of tractor over the lifetime of the tractor.
End with the phrase all women use on us poor men; "Look how much money I saved us, Dear!"

Guess I am different because I don't blame her a bit. I sure would be frosty if my wife told me she bought a multi thousand dollar item without us discussing it.

I guess I have to agree with MarkV. What has always worked for us, through thick and thin, was to put what money we had in one pile and decided what to do with it together.

OUCH !! I've been at it a few years and always somehow break the news in advance of making a purchase ... Like "I sure need to get a ____" "Getting a_____ would be so Nice"

Then after awhile I'm told "Whatever" and then I go to town!!!!!!
