I just done the 50 hour oil change on my B2400. I drained two plugs on the rear axle housing, one on the mid PTO, and one on the gear case behind the bell housing. Cleaned the strainer and changed the filter. The big question is, how does the new oil get back into the gear box behind the bell housing? It sets up there all by itself.

Another question. Does the hydraulic oil break down, or is it changed because of dirt and small cuttings from machining.

Dunno. On my tractor filling the hydraulic fluid runs to all of the rear gearboxes. The front end requires that you drain and fill three seperate gearboxes. Mine is a 4WD M Series gear tractor and it fills in the rear of the tractor. A good check is to be sure that you got out of the tractor about what the manual said so you know you did NOT forget one of the drain plugs. Be sure that when you put back the same quantity you drained out that it comes to the same point on the hydraulic dip stick as it did before.

Certainly the 50 hour change will get a lot of metal contamination out that the filters did not get. I would be sure to clean the screen if it has one. I had a tractor where the hydraulics seemed to move slowly and the dealer suggested changing the hydraulic oil. He indicated (not Kubota) that they had seen several where the oil got contaminated and no longer worked properly when people did not change them per the required maintenance manual. I changed it and it worked better. I really believe the reason it worked better is the screen was really sludged up. This was a Massey and it does not use cartridge hydraulic filters. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Just re-read your post. It says FRONT GEAR CASE and you are talking about draining the rear gear case. If you changed the oil in the front and the rear, you probably have from two to four places you MUST add hydraulic fluid. This is well covered in the operator manual in the maintenance section. Mine has 3 places to add fluid on the front axle and one on the rear axle. I do NOT have a mid PTO.

bud - you have me totally confused. I have a B1700 so it is the same as your 2400. To drain the FRONT axle housing, there is a completely different set of drain plugs than for the HST and hydraulic system. The main system, the one you are supposed to service at 50 hours, contains fluid for the HST and the hydraulics of the tractor. This system is drained by 3 plugs, and fills in only one spot - the yellow plastic cap under and behind the seat. If you filled it there, you filled the whole system, but NOT the front axle/drive. Front axle service does not need to be done until 300 hours (but I am going to do mine at 200 just because)

PaulB I guess our tractors have the same drive train, so you may have missed one gearcase. It's located behind the bellhousing for the flywheel. It takes a 14mm wrench instead of a 17mm like the three on the transaxle. In my book they only show the drain plug for the mid PTO and the left rear axle housing, but not the right. The picture on PP 63,,at the top of the page, shows a drain for what they call the front mission case above the drive shaft to the front axle. Thats the one, and I don't see how the oil would get to it from the transaxle. By the way, it was super UDT that drained out of it.

Please tell me in as great a detail as possible how I can tell if mine if filled with udt or super udt?

By golly Bud I think you are right. Says right in the book Drain plug (both side) and I ignored the both side part. That means there are 4 plugs, 3 which take a 17 mm wrench, and 1 14mm. As is often the case, your original question ended up answering other questions, thanks

Wen I don't feel like going into great detail, but I know I drained the same type oil from the front gear case that I drained from the transaxle. I assumed they would use the same oil they recomend for replacement. Or do you know better? If so let all of us in on it.

Paul If you have nothing, like a mower, under your tractor, take a look and see if you could tell how oil would get from the back gearcase to the small one in the front. I couldn't find a fill plug ,and don't see anything refering to it in the manual. I'll not run the tractor with the possibility of having a dry gearcase.

Bud - I have the manual in front of me. Did you or did you not drain the front axle? The 14 mm plug you pulled called "front mission case" is NOT NOT NOT the front axle. Why the hell they call it a front mission case is beyond me, but it must be a funny translation of japanese to english. Draining and replacing the fluid in the front gears are described on page 64 under the heading "Changing Front Axle Case Oil (4WD)"
