Here is a little info that may save some of you a few dollars if you use your 4wd tractor a lot or plan to keep it for many years. Sunday I was tearing into my recently purchased used 7275 Cub Cadet . I decided to pull the somewhat tight front driveshaft out to lube up the splines as they were pretty rusted. Here is what I noticed after pulling the shaft, cleaning and greasing all the shafts and yokes. If you allow your splines to rust up. Your yokes will wear out. Mine are worn but still good enough to operate for many years. I found that the yokes are now loose after cleaning out the rust. I did replace the worst of the 4 yokes. This could have been prevented if somebody took this shaft out and greased the splines once every year or two. I also found this same problem with the rear yoke on the MMM pto shaft. Lack of grease wore out this yoke. I replaced this yoke also and that shaft is like new again. Simple maintanance can save lots in repairs.

Jim, can you describe your Cub Cadet's driveshaft? Is it enclosed? Are there any grease fittings on the spline yokes? I believe there are many tractors that have fittings for greasing these critical points. On some tractors, removing this shaft is not "simple" maintenance, but on your tractor and problably many others, this is surely a good idea. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The 7275 front driveshaft is enclosed on the front end section. There are two half covers bolted together on the front end and a tube that hooks to the covers and encloses most of the front shaft. There are no grease fittings on the u-joints. Being a mechanic for 10 years and a do it yourselfer for the next 24 makes me want to explore everything and see how it works. Fixing it is second nature to me. That was why I pulled the shaft to check it out and grease up the splines. I also found the front housing is lacking of grease and I may need to replace the front bushings and pin. That looks like a fun job that will be pretty easy to handle using the loader to lift the tractor off the front end. Little by little I'll have this tractor in top condition in no time. Next winter if I have time, I will stripm it down for a paint job and decal replacement.

I'm somewhat concerned about the front driveshaft on my B2400 Kubota. It appears that it is loose on the splines at the transmission,as it seems to have a lot of wobble to it. Unfortunetly you can't get at it unless you split the trans from the frame from what I can tell. Even the workshop manual gives no description on how to remove from the unit. I spray it with WD40 from underneath and hope some of it finds it's way to the splines.

My Cub front shaft can be removed very easily. There are 3 pins in the front shaft yokes. They are held in place with a snap ring. These are all that hold the shaft on. The yoke on the transmission has no pin on mine. All you need to do is slide the ring back on the yoke. Drop the pin out of of both yokes on the front end. This allows the yokes to be moved back on the driveshaft. Then you can pull the entire shaft out. Use a good quality grease on the splines and re-install it. Kubota? I have no clue as to what they use. I would think that it would be very similar to any other tractor.
