I hope you post a follow up with what the dealer finds.
Since both front wheels locked up, I'd guess the front differential gears may have failed. However, that seems kind of surprising since the unit was in 2WD.
Another possibility is the drive shaft, or the shaft (at the transmission) may have failed..

Please do let us know how this turns out.

This thread just reminds me of how often we never find out how something turns out. Especially if someone has taken the trouble to repond to a post, let's please all do our best to let everyone know the outcome. Inquiring minds want to know! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I sometimes wonder if I'm overdoing the front axle on my 5030 when carrying maximum loads - has anyone experienced any problems with Grand L front axles, catastrophic or otherwise?

I can report the OPPOSITE. Despite lots of abuse and heavy loads (ex: fully loaded buckets of gravel run up and down 1/2 mile of rough road; forgot to take it out of 4wd for 1/2-1 mile paved road runs!) my L4330 has shown no signs of trouble.

JRobyn:

Thanks for the post, it's right in line with what I've been hoping/expecting. It's funny, I hesitated to bring this post back up to the top of the heap because I didn't want to have front axle failure grand l4330 hst emblazoned all over the place, but I did want to know about any problems.

As for ( forgot to take it out of 4wd for 1/2-1 mile paved road runs!) ) - you're not alone. I once took mine for a high-speed (16 mph) joy-ride twice around my shop's (large) parking lot in 4WD - ouch! Good thing it was JUST before my first oil changes were due - I just considered it a nice little breaking-in session. No gears came out with the front axle lube, so I think I dodged a bullet. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Take care, John D.

I often think of my poor axle on my 5030, we have moved so much sand and rock and I have the big material bucket. The thing holds 1/2 yard heaped I believe and sits out on the q/a. I have the rear r-4's loaded and you can watch the front tires squashing out even at recommended pressure.

Its a bit better when I have the big snowblower on the back but makes me worry about driveline windup on high traction surfaces. Haven't had a problem yet, even have a few 4wd pavement miles lol. Nothing too bad except tread scalloping.

Also worry when bouncing with a full bucket and see the tires down to the rim lol! Haven't lost a bead or broken anything.
