Freeze/frost proof outdoor faucets - what's good, what's bad?

My house (23 years) still has the original Mansfield anti siphon faucets. I rebuilt them several years back with parts from ACE. My notes say that Mansfield is now Prier???

I have to wonder, are those of you who have had freezing (not when it's your fault due to hose or no slope) using long or short versions?

I have used everything from 4" to 12". Frankly, the longer they are, the worse they perform for me. Best I had was a non-frost protected sillcock ball valve, I think I got a half dozen years off that one before a hose was left on.

It's still warm this week, so I think I will go ahead and take in all the hoses and turn the cutoffs while I'm still thinking about it. Last years' December subzero snap caught us flat footed and we paid the price.

We have a buried freeze proof at the dog pen. My son was always leaving the hose on in cold weather when he was young. To keep it from freezing up again I placed a Y adapter on the faucet, placed the hose on one side and slightly opened the other side. Now even if he left the hose on it would drain back and not freeze.

Does anyone know of a PEX faucet combination? It seems PEX can take the expansion.

That is why you angle the faucet to the outside when you mount it. It has to be able to drain to the outside.

And as I mentioned, I did not remove the hose because I expected to return soon and life happened. The angle of the dangle would not have helped.

That's probably why people mount them without enough angle to drain. If mounting on clapboard siding, the angle of the siding board is likely more than the fixed angle of the faucet flange and so they are angled inward by mistake. I like the Woodford's I used since the flange is floating and allows for good drainage angles on the pipe while still getting a solid flange mount to the wall.

The thing about using a stopNwaste shut off on the inside is the OP should be able to fully drain the portion of the pipe leading to the outside.

I agree. StopNwaste is much better for this application than a typical curb stop type valve.
