I've got an extra propane tank that I quit using since it has a leak in the shutoff valve, especially when going from closed to open or vice-versa. It's a Sherwood PV 14270. Can't find any online info on it re: repair parts. Have an email into Sherwood, but here's the question.
There is a fair bit of slop in the barrel when the valve is half open, I think it's due to the rubber seal, which appears to be a square O-ring, but I think it might be a regular O-ring that has succumbed to age. Comparable valves on their site indicate O-rings in the assembly, but it's always good to shop for advice from someone who might have dealt with this before.

Here's the chart from McMaster-Carr for o-ring chemical resistance.

Propane should fall under hydrocarbons. So looks like Viton type should work fine.
I would get a Viton kit and match it up -it's not too difficult to tell if propane is leaking with soapy water or the sniff test

Here's another valve problem from a different tank, this one wouldn't shut off all the way and you'd get a waft of propane when you walk by, and it managed to leak off nearly a full tank over winter. It appears that the teflon seat might have too much wear in it, have been unable to locate any parts and vendors have been no help so far. There appears to be the number 10 in the middle of the teflon if that's any help. Anyone got any ideas or sources for parts? I don't want to replace the valve, because that is kinda like buying a whole tire and wheel when the valve core is leaking, plus that's three more opportunities for new leaks on a currently secure fixture.

Edit to add: It is a Grandhall 11052 model, have an email off to the distributor to see if they have parts.

Are you sure on that number? Could the 0 actually be a C? Sherwood Service Valve with Lift Truck Connector PV1427C/PA1425AM

It's been a while but all the forklift, manlifts and truck engines on propane were using liquid draws. Wereas the smaller generators, weed burners and grills all use a vapor valve.
To the best of my knowledge all of these valves should either be fully open or fully closed.

It's quite possible the first tank valve is a 1427C, as the catalog linked showed just the valve to be a 1427B. That repair was successful, as it held a full tank over winter, inside the shop where any leaks would have been readily apparent.
Since I was unable to find anyone that had replacement parts, I burnished everything up nicely and put a new O-ring on it, the slightest of bead of thread seal at the very top* and buttoned it up. Made some balloons from rubber glove fingers and pressurized the tank with a conical rubber tip air nozzle, no apparent leaks after an hour.
*the right threads, not the stem.

This goes for almost all low and high pressure cylinders because most have double seals.... Only exception is Acetylene and it 1/2 to 1 turn....
