going to look at 2 different tractors friday. 1050 jd 2wd with bushhog and plow, 1084 hrs. $9000. appears to be in excellent shape and seller says everything works. #2 2610 ford 2wd, no implements, 7000 hrs but also appears to be in good shape. everything works, no smoke, good tires and some new parts, per seller. which one is the better buy, assuming it is what they say it is? tractor would not see tons of use, mainly bushhogging, but 7000 hrs is a lot imo. decent deals or keep looking?

forgot to mention, both are diesels and the ford is $6700

The JD seems like a better tractor for the money. The hours difference is huge. Be sure that the hours are accurate. The JD seems to have extremely low hours. I personally like the Ford product better. I have owned several Fords and one John Deere. The Ford is very easy to work on and some parts are much cheaper. But when you are looking at older tractors, there are many things to consider other than brand.

went and looked at the ford today and it is in really good shape. guages, lights, evrything works. guy said he bought it from someone who refurbishes/restores tractors and he's selling because of his back. he's had many surgeries and is unable to drive it. cranked right up and ran @15 mins and no smoke. new tires, all fluids looked good, no leaks that i saw. front end and rear links appeared solid. $6400 and he said he was slightly negotiable. he had some implements that are sold already. makes me wonder why no one took the tractor? price high? does this model ford have a solid reputaton? i'm not familiar with the 2610

I suspect I would go with the Deere if the hours are correct and try to buy it for $8000 to 8500. It is still approaching 25 years old and might need new rubber.

The Ford sounds reasonable and is a heavier tractor than the Deere/Yanmar if you need the extra size I would consider it but that is alot of hours and may have more failures as you go. With those hours I wouldn't pay much over $5000.

Did he say anything about the refurbisher doing any major work to the tractor? I would treat it as approaching it's service life @ 7000 hours....it could last you 10 years without a problem, but could also last you 10 days with big problems. I personally wouldn't roll the dice on it at all.

calbug,

I would make one phone call before deciding on the Ford. Call a New Holland Dealer anywhere and find out if you can get an injector pump for the Ford 2610. I am hearing rumors that parts for that series Ford tractor is becoming difficult to obtain.

I'd have to go with the JD. The plow and brush hog are worth something and when you subtract that from the $9000 asking price you have not much money to get 5900 hours difference. Even if the JDs tires are dried out and need changing you would be ahead. I would find out who owned it all those years and only used it 1087 hours. There might be a reason/ story there you need to know about.

planning on going to look at deere tomorrow and will get more info, but it looks really nice in pics. may also look at a ford 2910 with 1500 hrs, with no implements($5900) which is close to where the jd is. the deere has been for sale a couple months now which concerns me. maybe he's unwilling to negotiate or tractor has issues. i talked with the guy over phone and he said it was flawless. little less power than the ford and no power steering per tractordata.com, but bushhog looks good and a set of harrows. personally i feel like i'd be getting more tractor with either ford, but the jd has good reputation and resale would be better i would think.

bottom line, the deere is overpriced. the ford is more tractor and i would prefer a ford. called the ford dealership and he said in good shape it's worth $5-5500 and parts are available. i may offer him $5500 and see what he says. if he balks, i'll keep looking.
