Buying Advice ford new holland 6640, 7740 tractors

been looking at some ford 6640 and 7740 tractors would like to hear your experiences with the 40 series tractor good and bad especially any trouble spots to check on or avoid especially the transmission

they are some good tractors just avoid the sle transmission i think they are trash but other than that and the sheet metal and front axle they are the exact same tractor made for 20+ years so parts are easy to be had

The SLE tranny is well liked by most, good powershift but problems with a few years of it.

The SLE tranny is fine but we had a little trouble with a few early white cab ones but nothing major , 7740 sle is an excellent tractor !

all the one i ever delt with was parish tractors and they didn't hold up that well the sl is a better transmission in my opinion but i agree that when working they are a good transmission but when they break they are expensive to repair

I worked for a crew that had 12 x 40 series from 7740's to 8340's for many years and 1 0r 2 of the 7840 SLE turbo's gave a little trouble but no more than any other brand we've had . You could never call them unreliable as they all did over 10'000 hrs but maybe yes we opened more sle's than sl dp's but not enought to put me off buying one .
