Optima had a good name when they were US made, but the rumor is since they were bought out (06) and production moved to Mexico (and all the original engineers laid off for not being willing to go along with cost cutting) the consensus seems to be they are average at best, at a premium price. Odyssey and North Star seem to be the current favorites?
For run-of-the mill driving, I just get a store-brand battery with the longest warranty. I have been told that the length of warranty is directly related to the depth of the case under the plates for sulfates (when they reach the plates they short out). More room, longer life.
