Tractor
???
I hope this is an appropriate place to post this: I am "new" to tractors. I was born and raised a city kid in Colorado and have lived in SD now for 9 years. I recently re-married, this time to a farmer's daughter!

We will be moving to our first farm (15 acres) that we get to plan from scratch. I have never owned a tractor and have researched and changed my mind on what to do time and time again.

I currently am considering buying a '49 WD for small chores and a '70 Ford 9000 for blowing snow and moving bales (and if we plant any oats/flax/etc.). I am familiar enough with the WD's, but I can't find out ANY information about the 9000 - except tech data on tractordata.com. In fact, there is only 1 for sale at tractorhouse.com.

Does anyone own one of these tractors? Know someone else who does? Know anything about them? Would recommend/not recommend?

help....

i run a 8000, 9600, and 9700 they are some good heavy built tractors i like mine and we use them all the time for every thing u can think of. the main problem with them is if they have daul power and not many of them do only the 9700 i run has it and i dont like the headacke. for the right price u can not beat them for a large tractor they are pretty simple and cheap to work on

Father in law has an older IH 1066 on the his farm. I'm familiar with that tractor and have been looking for one. But HOLY SMOKE people are proud of their 1066s. I can have the 9000 for 2/3 to 1/2 the price of a decent 1066. PLUS, the 9000 has a cab with a/c, heat, and radio. It does have 8000 hours on it.

I sat in the 9000 and really liked the way it is all laid out. Like I said, I am entertaining the though of purchasing, just can't find any reviews/info.

Whodat526, this one does have dual power. What does that mean and why does it produce headaches?

it just depends on how they where maintained my 9700 which i just got had the dual power disconected and it stay between the two gears most the time and messed up the hyd. system and they are not cheap to fix when u cant find the problem didn't know it had dual power till we split it because they removed all the controls and we changed some parts that really didn't need to replace but while in there decided that would be best instead of having to go into later. but if in working order and used proberly they can be a good thing because the dual power is a under drive so if plowing snow and it gets into a thick spot u just hit the switch into the low range and keep goin just make sure u check all the gears exp. 2 on the 9000 for some reason that gear is the one that breaks and yes where i am at a good 1066 can run 10k plus

The problem with that series tractor was many of the models didnt have an adequate hydraulic filter mechanism. So contaminants might travel to all the things working off the hydraulic pump including the dual power shift , the differential lock, pto brake, and 3 pt lift. My experience along with my brother in law is when the tractor gets warm say bushhogging for 30 minutes the pto stops. Yes stops working or the lift arms wont move. forget the dual power or differential lock. I sold mine for areound 2400 a big loss because i couldnt afford the shop fees and no one (non internet) understands the system. I had a shop manual and test equipment. Ford are great but avoid these.
My brother in law has his 25000 TW35 4 wd in a shed he has worked it 1 day since he bought it. Looks great 4 wd good tires sounds fine but the pto and lift stop working when it gets warm.

For what you describe as needs I would go with a more modern gas engine 40 Hp tractor with 3 pt lift that maby you can put a loader on.

We bought one new when they first came out. Right off the bat, they had to service the dual power(2 buttons on the floorboard to shift up / down) After the initial fix though, we never had a minutes problem with it. Good strong tractor, never had any of the problems mentioned here with hydraulics, pto, etc. CHeck the shifting of the dual power, if it works correctly, when you push the left floor button it basically cuts the speed in half, the right one, puts it back in direct drive. It keeps you from having to throttle back for end of row turns when discing, cultivating or even mowing. You can safely reduce your speed but keep the mowers turning at rated speed. I wouldnt want to have to pay to service them though. I think they had to break the tractor in half to fix what ever was wrong with ours. I dont recall it even having a hydraulic filter on it, but it has been over 30 years since we bought it so it could be I just dont recall. But I dont think many of the Ag tractors back then had filters.

Not much experience of the older ones but the TW's have been faultless for us !

I dont remember any issues till you get into the 2000 or 3000 hours. Ford had an add on filter they put on after the issues were found. I dont remember any hydraulic filters except for JI Case, most had screens, magnets or nothing.
If you got one that works. then great. if not dump it. A lot of other colors were making a similar type of partial powershift and all had some type of problems with filtering and wear. The later versions till had problems even with filters on the hydraulics.
