Hello guys, I have somewhat of a problem with my ford 860 tractor with the dual clutch AKA live PTO. Sunday night I was out moving my mobile chicken coop in reverse gear. Coming to a stop, I pressed the clutch to attempt to shift in 3rd forward gear and the dreaded grinding noise appeared. I let up off the clutch and press it in again and it finally went into to gear and I went about my merry way. The next morning, I hopped on the tractor and attempted to move it and the grinding noise once again happened. After several attempts at pressing clutch and trying get into gear, I finally admitted defeat. Some things that I notice is that the PTO will still engage and disengage with the pressing of the clutch perfect every time. With tractor off, I can also shift into all gears and if left in gear and attempt to start, the tractor will lurch in the selected gear position. I'm just at a lost!!!! Any information would be great.

Have you or anyone tried adjusting the free play on the pedal? What's the history and ownership of the tractor? Any previous clutch problems? More info needed.

Tried adjusting, no avail. I've had the tractor for 2 years and have never had a problem with it until Sunday night. Thought the clutch was stuck but I've driven it long enough to warm up, had in high gear and jammed brakes but nothing. Could something have come loose in the trans case that won't allow it to go into gear but will the pto?

Does the PTO grind when you put it on? If not sounds like something might have bent or broke. I notice on my 1920 the PTO will grind when I activate it when the clutch needs to be adjusted.

Does double clutching help?

Pto doesn't grind. The grinding only starts when trying to shift in a forward or reverse gear. I mean, I can't even get into gear and the pto works fine. My next step is to drain the fluid and then open the top and bottom access panels on the trans to see if something has come loose.

Drained trans case today and removed access panel and found a bolt on the panel itself. Looked through access hole and could tell were the bolt came from. But the clutch itself looked as if it where engaging with the press of the petal. Any ideas?
