First, thanks to all of you for all your help with my 850 and 1841 questions.

My question about my 850 transmission is, to paraphrase George Jetson, "Jane, how do you shift this crazy thing?"

I have the operators manual. It has a lovely picture of the shift pattern but it's not much help. I also have the service manual, but it has even less information. I have been driving standard transmissions since my Dad's AC WD. All have been in an "H" pattern of some sort.

So far, I have figured out that first gear is in the "up" level and forward - toward the engine - and that reverse is in the "up" level and to the rear. I haven't found any more gears on that level.

In the down position, is the shifter just supposed to swing in an arc around the pivot or does it move side to side like a four speed? How do I find each of 2, 3, 4 and 5?

You cannot imagine how stupid I feel writing this :ashamed: but I just can't find any documentation anywhere on the internet or in the manuals.

Ignorantly yours,

Gayle Linke

Don't feel stupid, I just bought a Ford 650 and had a similar problem. I do not know if the 850 has the same shift pattern but I finally found the 650 has three levels in the up/down. Up all the way has 3rd to the front, reverse to the rear, down all the way has 4th to the front and 5th to the rear, the midway position has 2nd to the front and 1st to the rear. Maybe this will help.

yep.. that 5 speed shift pattern is the same for all *5* and *6* fords.

up with 3/r makes a nice semi-shuttle (unsync) for loader work.

if you don't like 4/5 you can make a flip over lockout using a door hinge.. flip in place then you are limited to the 2 top gates..

i did mine with a piece of a hinge and a washer.. some drill and welding and grinder work. took 5 minutes maybee.

Hi Soundguy,
I have been a member of this forum for a little over an hour and I have already found out that "You da Man". What a wealth of knowledge you bring to the table. Hope you continue to help us rookies.

Soundguy and Dave,

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been using the 3/R and thinking it was 1/R! Who would have thought that there are three levels? I was thinking that 1st wasn't any lower than 1st on my 1841. Glad to see that I am wrong.

Now that shift pattern makes more sense.

I'm going to find me all the gears tonight!

Thanks again,

Gayle
