I have a 641 and it is not running that well either. I ordered the "Ignitor" from Genesee Products LLC (Electronic ignition to replace my points) and a rebuild kit for my Marvel Schebler carb from Farmerlink LLC. Unfortunatly I am in Afghanistan till December so I can't report on how well this will work until then. I will also be doing a full tune-up and using "Sea Foam" to clean the combustion chamber/valves and crankcase. These old Fords are fun to work on. Good luck on your endeavors.

I'd suggest spending $10 and rebuilding the carb. If it is anything like the 8n's there are 3 fuel filter screens. One in the tank connected to the sediment bowl, one in the sediment bowl, and one where the fuel line enters the carb. Check/clean/replace all of these.

Given that it starts fine and runs for a little bit and then dies sounds like it is using up all of the gas that did trickle to the carb, but then dies. Let it set awhile, more gas will trickle in, and same thing. The tractor is using gas just a tad faster than you are supplying it.

wow.. that post is all over.

I'd suggest checking the tires and bumper while you are at it.

slow down ...

voltage reg? why.. has nothing to do with the ignition. you could chuck the vreg and genny off the engine and a hot battery will run that tractor for days.

timing? why? if it was timing it wouldn't start good and run the first 20' ????

running then stalling out is almost always a fuel deliver issue.

pull the bowl drain at the bottom of the carb and let it drain into a jar.. bet it's a drip or not even a trickle.

trace back from there. most of the times it's a dirty screen inthe elbow.. or farther up and a plugged fuel tap. could also be a sticky float needle, heavy flaot, or stuck float.

zenith? it will work.. not as economical as a MS carb.. but will work.. but it needs a good fuel flow just like the ms.. so why not fix what you got before you start changing out parts all over it.

My 861 did the same thing. It was a sticking float as Soundguy mentioned above. You can probably lightly tap the carb bowel with the end of a wooden hammer handle or something and it will un-stick. A little cleaning would then be in order.
