A friend bought a Ford 800 series. Is there an easy way to tell if it's an 850 (transmission PTO) or 860 (live PTO)? Such as PTO shaft will turn when in neutral (by hand) on 850, but not 860???? (I have not tried this, just asking for an easy way to tell) Front emblem say Ford 800. Thanks!

The 860 has a two stage clutch and "live" PTO. If the clutch rod clevis is in the extended (long) hole, the clutch pedal is very high off of the footboard. Considerably lower if in the short position. You should be able to feel the increased resistance of the second pressure plate as you continue to push the clutch pedal down after releasing the drive clutch.

The easiest and most precise way is to check the model number stamped into the bell housing above the starter.

Of course, you could start it, turn on the PTO, and watch the PTO shaft as you depress the clutch pedal.

I did not know the model would be stamped on the bell housing, I only thought the serial number would be there Thank you very much. I'll look next time I see him.

Update: Thanks to STD, I found the model (860) stamped right where he said it would be! Owner is very happy to find out he has "live" PTO.

The new owner is having trouble mastering the shifter (5 speed) He was able to drive it out of the barn so we could find the model number, but has a lot of trouble figuring out how to get it into reverse.

As a kid I learned on 4spd. First time I was on a 5spd I was a teenager. I thought it was the stupidest thing I'd ever saw. Then Dad bought a 77 Oliver with a 6spd and 2 reverse speeds. I then realized the 5spd Ford was pretty simple. :)

SDT's explanation of the clutch pedal design is a dead giveaway. If the operator isn't using PTO he'll like the clutch a LOT better if he changes the pinned position to lower the clutch pedal. Understanding that in that position he has no PTO control. But it's sure easier to get your foot on top of the pedal!!!! :)

The Ford 5 speed transmission has a vertical gate. The shifter moves up/down through three gates. Each gate has only forward and reverse motion of the shifter handle.

Bottom gate: 4/5.

Middle gate: (most difficult to catch on the fly) 1/2.

Top gate: 3/R. Very convenient for FEL work prior to the day of shuttles and hydros.
