640 ford tractor
I have a Ford 640 tractor. It is about 18F out side the 3pt. hitch will not work. The tractor is keep in a unheated barn, i had the space heater (110,000 BTU) blowing on it for about 45 min form about 3 to 4 feet and it still did not come up. What could be wrong with it ?

Of course you have checked the fluid level for the hydro and all the fluid & filters have been changed as per owners manual maintenance? That would be my first check point.

The hydraulics system on the 640 only holds 2.25 gallons, so check the level.

Check the level, but if it’s anything like my old Ford, it’s dirty inside. My internal filters are extremely dirty and when it gets cold everything slows WAYYYYY down. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes for the lift to pick up. Seems like it would be easy enough to just change the filer, but Ford engineers back then must have forgot about that little detail because it’s not replaceable, at least not easily. I don’t know anything about the filter on the 640, but I’d look into changing the fluid, and try to find a way to clean the filter if it’s not replaceable. If you can’t access it, perhaps pour some diesel in to your hydraulic fluid and run for 10-15 minutes before draining it out. If the tractor only holds 2.5 gallons, it probably won’t take much, maybe ¼ gallon? Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along and make a suggestion.

I guess GROUCHY GRUMPY CRANKY is busy at the moment, hopefully he will return and give us an update.

He's probably waiting time looking for a filter he doesn't have due to bad info given to him.

First thing he needs to do is verify pump flow by removing the pipe plug in the 3x5 option cover under the seat, and crank over or start, but be ready to shut down if oil flows, maybee have a rag over the hop to prevent a geyser.

If oil flow, but no lift, unload valve could be stuck.

If no flow, there I likely frozen water occluding the auction line in the sump to the pump, or it has lost prime.

If you ate sure of no ice, replace plug under seat, remove plug on upper head of pump, and start engine, apply about 5psi air pressure using a rubber tipped blowgun to the hyd dipstick port, that should prime it if the intake is not blocked.

Had you read carefully, you’d have noticed I said that I know nothing about the filter on that tractor and used a lot of “if”s for that very reason. Just trying to offer some possibilities. Not sure why you feel the need to be so rude, but we could all use a bit less of it.

not sure why you feel the need to interject useless data into a thread.. but I'm sure the op could use less of it.

It's fine to TRY to help.. but if you have no knowledge of the application.. sometimes trying to help does not = helping..

And I wasn't being rude.. just stating a fact.

I don稚 know anything about the filter on the 640, but I壇 look into changing the fluid, and try to find a way to clean the filter if it痴 not replaceable.

This didn't help the op. it probably sent him looking for a filter that didn't exist, and trying to figure out how to clean a filter hat did not exist....

I'm surprised you didn't ask him to check his turbo encabulator, if it has one ??
