Ive seen the II part before but not 'Special'. What does that mean in terms of specs features etc? Does it indicate some sort of improvement over earlier models? Would the transmission be dual power? How much would you estimate one w/ low hours in good shape to bring ($$$wise)? Is there anything about this model which would make it more expensive to add remotes? What model loader would go w/ it? Would it be quick to mount/remove? Thanx!

What year is it? I think it means "specail utility" or SU which ahs to do with a I belive is a swept back axle versus a front axle that sticks straight out exactly perpendicular to the tractor.

Dont know what yr it is and theres but one pic which is a broadside. I found it at tractorhouse.com and wondered if it might work out (which is why Im asking here). Im to the point where I have a small farm in my sights and am planning to make an offer on it. Ill need a tractor right after 2nd cut so should start getting my ducks in a row now on it and some other equipment. If I can find a 5640sle that would be best but would like some sort of fall back just in case I cant find one easily or close by.

The "S" series tractors in the 5610, 6610, and 7610 tractors were the base models, had lower hydraulic pump capacities and were probably limited as to the number of remotes, not sure if you could option up to a higher capacity pump or not. Any dual power transmission would have been optional if even available. The "SU" was in the 4610 series only, and were the tractors with the light swept back axles. Any aftermarket loader manufacturer, such as Bush Hog, would have a quick detach loader available for this tractor. Ford also had one available, but I am not sure of the model for that tractor. Used demand is fairly high, prices will likely reflect this.

OK, that sounds like its not what Im looking for. Guess Ill keep an eye out for a non-special version. Thanx!

Where is the DP shifter located on a cabless tractor? Is along the lines of the differential locking pedal? Is the clutch wet or dry? tractordata.com shows 2 transmissions for the 5610 and neither look (to me) like DP. Is that correct? My needs would be better served by a tractor in the 5610 or 5640 HP class.

According to some of my data at my disposal, there were two versions of the 5610 "Special":

The 5610 EM3 Special was built in 1990-1991. This tractor had both an 8x2 and an 8x4 transmission available. Weight is listed as 5,800 lbs. Your description of "Series II" tends to point to this version, in my opinion.

The newer 5610S was the Mexican-built model from 1993-1996. This tractor lists only an 8x2 transmission. Weight is listed as 5,695 lbs. for this model. I will agree with dgl24087 and say that these were low-budget tractors stripped of many standard features and had limited options.

I'd say that the sky is the limit on loader options for either version of the 5610 and would guess that rear remotes would be rather easy to install.

I hope that I didn't confuse you too much. I'm just throwing out some of my research finds.

Not sure what you already know, but...

We have a 5610 (dunno series, or even year, but I'd guess its early 80's)

DP switch on that (cabless) is a rocker switch to the left of steering wheel on dash. Rabbit for fast and turtle for slow ;)

just for reference, diff pedal on floor behind right heel.

its got a NH 7210 loader on it. it does OK but it is SLOW. Maybe something with less lift capacity would give you better cycle times. it is QA (loader, not bucket) so off and on can be done pretty quick, ~10 minutes i guess

Thanx for the infos. I really dont know anything about the older Ford/NH tractors so its all pretty much new to me. I did wonder though if the 'special' I was looking at was the S model or something else. Guess I really need to find a source book and study that some.

As for the hi/lo 'shifter' I thought it was some sort of lever or foot pedal affair. Thats surprising its a switch. It doesnt matter too much about the slow cycle time as Im mainly thinking about fork lift rather than bucket and only infrequent use. The loader control is a joystick?

Thanx for the help...

yea, this one is a joystick, w/ float. its handy in that you dont have to move your hand over two levers, but you cant really do two functions at once. but if you are using forks then i guess it wouldnt really matter. the 7210 loader does seem oversized for this tractor, you should have plenty of other options.

as for hi/lo DP, ive seen 5610's w/ and w/o it. also, we used to have an old 7700 that was a foot pedal (rock forward and back, i think) and a 7710 that was a foot switch, push/click down to switch. they both had cabs so maybe that was the difference?

That really makes it much clearer about the hi/lo setup. Im sure haing the cab makes the diff on switch configuration. Thanx for taking the time to write all that down.

So, it sounds like the DP is electrohydraulic. Do I understand that correctly?

Just to sum this up just b/c the machine is marked series II doesnt necessarily mean its DP. Ill need to look for that control also. Were the non-series II models available w/ DP or was this one of the new features of that change?
