I recently purchased a Ford 545D loader and have been plowing snow with it a couple of times. Today while driving it the 8x8 shuttle tranny cuts out and tractor stops moving. All I have to do is press the pedal to the dump valve and release it then it will move. This happened quite a few times today both forward and reverse directions and in more than one gear. Anything that I should check first for the problem?

It sounds like a switch for the seat or shuttle . Check all of the connections . There may be a adjustment for the shuttle lever . This is where i would look first.

I will check the seat although I am unaware of any switches with the seat. I will then check the foot pedal for anything. I do not have to shift shuttle lever to get it to move but I do have to step on the pedal once and it will move.

i owned one of those tractors 445d, one of the best tractors i ever owned, loved that shuttle, that tractor might have a trans detent for loading trucks, i have had a few with that feature and sometimes they get stiff from not using much and a good lube job on the linkage normally frees it up. i keep thinking how i would like to have another of those tractors, i now have a new holland tn75.
good luck on finding the problem

What is a trans detent? It has the button at the end of the shuttle lever for the torque converter lockup.

a detent is normally setup with the brake pedal and it allows you to touch the pedal and it throws the transmission out of gear and allows the power of the motor to run the hydraulics, to speed up the lift speed or digging power without speeding up the tractor speed. sometimes if your in a tight spot and your loading a truck the perfect setup you want the the hydraulics of the tractor to raise the bucket high enough to get over the truck by the time you get to the truck, sometime that does not happen so you have to ride the brake, shift the transmission into nuetral or step on the trans detent with your foot to get the proper height with the bucket. normally your more construction type eq. have such a thing. your agg. tractors i do not think they have that. that 545 is more of a construction type tractor. i owned a 445d in 1994, theres been a lot of things happen since then and i cannot remember if that tractor has that feature or not , you might want to go to newholland web sight and look, i hope i did not confuse you to bad, sorry if i did.

Thanks Tom, Im not confused now. After you stop the tractor with the detent, do you just step on the pedal again to have the tractor move again once the loader is raised high enough.

normally when you lift your foot off the pedal the trans. engages, the newer bigger loader tractor have a button on the loader control you push. i always like that loader on the 545d series, that tractor is one of the few the loader is added at the factory instead of added later, the only thing that bothered me about the tractor was i thought the engine was a little loud, but it has the power and i loved that tranmission , i wish my tn75 had that, its hard to find those tractors around here, il. ,
good luck on your tractor
have a great day

Ok, now I am familiar with what you are talking about Tom. I ran a couple of JD 310's C,D,SG backhoes that had that integrated into the loader control and also on the collar shift for the trans. That is a nice feature but I know the 545D does not have that. I guess I will do what FULLPULL suggested and look all the electrical over.

jgbanshee, Did you ever figure out what was wrong? I have a very similar problem, only I don't know of any foot pedal button to push to get it to start working again. Please let me know what you found out. Thanks.
