Ford 5000 pinging sound when PTO engaged

Hello TBN,

As per title, when I engage the PTO of my 5000 (low idle ~1000-1200, nothing attached) I can hear a repetitive pinging coming from the rear axle housing. It sounds as if it's being tapped with a hammer. Same set of pings repeating a few seconds apart. Increasing engine speed seems to make the noise go away. Is this a problem or a pressure relief?

If I can figure out how, I'll try posting a video or sound clip.

Do you have any signs of low hydraulic pressure? Does the tractor have dual power?

No to dual power. The only equipment i have with a hydraulic hookup is the hay mower with a single acting cylinder, and there was no issue lifting that as far as i could tell. No issue with the 3pt lifting either the last time i had the plow on it.

With the pings being a few seconds apart, that is way too slow to be gears, bearings, etc.. Since the PTO clutch is hydraulically actuated, am leaning towards something hydraulic. If I were you, I'd pull the lift cover and have a look in there. You are going to need some help lifting that beast. A hoist would be ideal.

From memory that 5000 had a small block that was meant to be the PTO brake. If you remove the lift cover look carefully at that brake pad to see if it is possibly rattling around. NOTE: there is a bolt hidden between a couple of webs of cast iron on the right side about in the middle. If you don't remove that bolt the cover will not come off. Don't ask me how I this though.....
