I replaced the neutral safety switch on my 1987 Ford 4610 (8x4 trans with shifters on the column). Now, the tractor will only start in gear (high/low/reverse) and not neutral. Any ideas what I did wrong? I double checked to make sure it was installed correctly and exactly as the old switch came out. Levers were in neutral, etc.
When I crank in neutral i get nothing. As soon as i engage any gear on the high/low shifter it cranks right over. My understanding was that, when in neutral the ball at the bottom of the switch is "open" acting as a ground for the starter circuit. When in gear the ball pushes up, closing the circuit and not allowing the tractor to start. I don't understand how I could have possible reversed that by changing the switch.
If I can't figure this out I will have to bypass the switch because it's more dangerous as the tractor now HAS to be in gear to start.
