I need to know what kind of tranny this is and more importantly whats inside.
It's in a 4500, or at least thats what the frame is.
As best I can tell its some sort of automatic. Heres a few pics.

There is no clutch pedal or anywhere for one. It has a shifter on top but I'm not sure how many gears, and a lever on the dash that connects to the right lower side to shift to high or low.

When I got this tractor the motor was froze up from sitting, then the starter was also froze, and then the pistons in the fuel injector pump were froze.

Now it runs but I cant put it in gear when its running, it just grinds and wont go in. I'm guessing the clutch or torque converter, or whatever is in there is froze up. I'm probably going to start it in gear and see if I cant get it to break loose but before I do I would like to have some idea of what I'm dealing with.
Does this have some sort of clutch, wet or dry, or a torque converter, or something else?
Any info and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Also, what is the part on the side of the tranny in the third pic? It has a line that runs to the radiator and a wire on the bottom.

Thanks :)

You have a 4 speed power reversing transmission (with a 25 year old filter on it). It is a torque converter driving wet forward and reverse clutch packs which in turn drive a four speed manual gearbox. The forward/neutral/reverse lever is to the left of the steering column. The tube leading towards the radiator is for the transmission cooler, the wire probably connects to the transmission temperature sender.

So the lever I thought was high and low is actually forward and reverse. That sounds right. I wasn't finding a reverse on the stick.

Thanks for the info. Now I know what to look for. Yeah, it needs new filters and most of the hoses. It's in pretty rough shape right now.
Hopefully I can get it to break loose. I really don't want to split this thing.

Thanks :)

Well it runs and drives now!
Now I just have to put everything back together and change the hoses, filters, and fluids. Get some tires and hook up the dash and I should have a pretty decent tractor.

I don't think the clutches were stuck at all. Originally, I thought the lever was for high and low so I put it in gear, and then tried putting the shifter in gear. This morning I put the shifter in gear while the forward/reverse lever was in neuteral, and then put it in reverse and it slid right in with no problem and the brakes can easily hold it still.

Thanks so much guys for the help.

Kinda thought that might happen. Transmission, rear axle, power steering and loader/backhoe are all separate reservoirs. Consider filling the transmission with inexpensive oil meeting the spec, running it for a short while and dumping that. Reason being you can’t drain more than about 60% of the capacity because of the torque converter. Use a quality oil for the final fill.
