Backhoe Ford 4500 Transmission 2nd gear replacement

I thought it was necessary to start a new thread, to hopefully get some input.
started out just to replace the torque converter and pump. I found a tooth from one of the Gears on the bottom of the tranny while cleaning it, turned out to be 2nd gear, of course it was the bottom shaft... never had one of these apart before. never worked on a back hoe before....

I was amazed at the chunk that came out of the gear and how there was no other damage done. I now need to remove the tranny from the rear end to remove the shifter lever to remove the lower shaft. I'm in so deep now I can't see the light. :drink::drink:

missing pg's 26,27,28... etc of the transmission over haul section. for separating the gears.

if it was mine i would find a 8sp trans mission and do away with the torque converter setup. that is what we done when we started having trouble with a 5500 tlb it really is a big job to change it over either and will have a better trans with mower power

For the info it's certainly something to think about. I never had this unit very long, but I don't think it's owners looked after it, I was the person that got it when it decided to break down, it should be alright though after this. I would love to put an 8sp into it, but I wouldn't even know where too look for a machine that would fit it, or who to ask. I'm trying to wrap my head around how this happened, so I know what not to do.

one out of a 4000, 4600, 4500, 4400, 3910, 2810 4610 will all fit it

The transmission linkage doesn't change the gears going forward and backward. It is stuck in one location - suggestions to repair?

If the shifter moves the linkage down to the transmission top, the rollpin or shift fork has broken in the bell housing at the shifter valve. This is one scenario.
Another is that something broke, such as the ears on the torque converter where it connects to the transmission pump.
Still another possibility is that the torque converter flex plate tore away at the center where it is bolted to the converter.

An old thread I know but just wanted to thank you for your pictures, working on an old 4500 with torque convertor now and finding any pictures is difficult, yours helped a lot.
