FORD 4400 3CYL DIESEL
I have a ford 4400 3cyl. Today when I attempted to engage the pto, the shaft snapped off about 1/2 inch from the outside of the case. I can see the end of the shaft inside the hole that it fits in. I was wondering how I go about repairing this. Is this a big job? Thanks RAY

It is a transmission pto

Then the shifter should go through a 3 bolt cover on the side of the housing rather than through the rear axle center section itself. Drain the oil and remove the bolts, cover and PTO shifter. As the shifter shaft is broken, you may lose the detent ball and spring when the cover is withdrawn. Be prepared to retrieve them from the housing. Follow the link to the NH website, click on New Holland parts search, enter 4400 and view page 07D03 in the transmission section.

There is no 3 bolt cover on the side of the housing. The shaft goes directly into the housing.

If so, you don't have a transmission driven PTO, you have Independent PTO. That lever and valve is broken down on page 07D04 and the repair will require removing the 3PT hitch cover at a minimum, and possibly a rear split as well. BTW, the cover is still there, just the PTO control doesn't go through it.
