I'm looking at a Ford 4000 diesel with some implements. 6' heavy duty /dual wheel bushhog, 8' heavy duty cutting hare, 7' boxblade and hay spear.

Serial numbers he could find were:

C7NN-7006AN

07NN6015

4000 Ford tractor w / equipment

Is 6000 dollars a reasonable price?

Would it be reasonable to add a loader to this tractor? What would the cost be? What type of lifting capacity could I expect?

I still have to find out what kind of transmission it has. Tractordata.com says there is an 8x2 or a 10x2 Select O Speed. Which is more desirable?

Thanks for the help. Adrian

There are quite a few threads on TBN regarding that select o speed......

the numbers you need to post are on the flat of the bellhousing aft of the starter.

the 3 cyl ford 4000 in general is a good solid machine.. good front axle for a loader.. better brake setup then the smaller models.. etc.

8spd tranny is the desireable on. the SOS is a mixed bag. not many people work on them. problems with the sos run the gambit from a couple bucks to a couple thousand to repair.. when you find parts and someone to work on it. locally, a sos tranny will devalue a tractor by about 30% compaired to a straight gear model. on the up side.. the later sos had most of the bugs worked out vs the older ones that came out in 59. also.. if it was maintained well, and it aworks in all ranges with no issues, hot and cold.. then, with proper maintenance and adjustments.. it will likely continue to work. a good 4000 8spd with those attachments.. I can see 6K$.. thought I'd offer 5500$.. :)

At $6,000, you are going to OK, however, like Soundguy said, $5500 would be better. Cash sometimes makes a difference. My oldest Son has one just like it and it is a workhorse. He actually ran a 850 NH round baler with his until he got his 1206 IH. Ken Sweet

Drove the 4000 today. It has the 8 spd trans. PTO pulled in and out and was leaking. It seemed fine side to side. Is this a serious problem? The front wheels seemed to be wearing (grinding) about a 1/8" strip of metal at the axle. The bearings might be bad? Both fenders supports in the rear showed welding and were rebroken again. There is a remote valve under/in front of the seat with 2 hyd lines that run toward the back (he never uses). It ran fairly well, not perfectly smooth, but didn't seem to smoke at all. The exhaust was really loud! Tires are fairly dry and worn. There was a boot on the right front of the transaxle that had some seeping. I looking on the top of the flat arched area on the transaxle aft of the starter (above where a loader might mount) and couldn't see any numbers, probably covered with the 2 layers of crusty paint.

transaxle?

what machine are we talking about again? can't be a 4000?

tires rubbing is an issue.. could be hub or beairng.

pto in / out play is BAD especially on an independent unit. ( not good on any unit.. but the manual units aren't too bad to dink with. if you are lucky it's still just a bearing and clip on the bearing carrier.. however I believe there is a thrust washer that is going to drop down when you pull the shaft to repair it.. something like a wad of grease on a broomstick might help you glue it in place for the re-stab.

not running smooth?

this is not a 6000$ machine.. and it's not a 5500$ machine either.

still want to see a pic since you have mentioned trans axle... are you saying it is 4wd??

Sounds like a fixer upper that maybe should be bought at about half or less than he is asking. That not running smooth is a bad sign. I personally would walk away. Ken Sweet

Sorry, Soundguy, bad choice of words with transaxle. Again, I'm a car guy, so to me the transmission and rear axle seem to be practically in one big housing. I assume a shaft runs through the rear axle housing to drive the PTO off the engine, I just haven't had one apart yet to fully visualize it, or looked at a schematic.

rear center housing and the tranny are seperate units.
