1976 Ford 4000 ,gas, have had the carb rebuilt a few times since I could never find a replacement new that worked well. I use it mainly Oct-Jan but crank it and let it run 10min or so every month when not in use. I use ethanol free 89 fuel, new fuel in Feb. I cranked it about a month ago and it cranked fine and ran 10min or so. I turn the fuel supply line at the fuel tank off and let it run until it burns the fuel in the carb and leave the fuel off until next crank and turn the valve back on when used.

I went to crank it yesterday, turned the fuel line on, sprayed a little starting spray in the intake and it cranked right up. I walked away to let it run and it ran about 30 seconds and stopped. It ran way too long to have run on the starting fluid. I sprayed a little more in the intake and it cranked right up and ran about 5 seconds. Tried again and the same. I could not tinker with it but will be going back out (45 min drive) maybe tomorrow.

Seems pretty clear it’s not getting constant fuel, so that’s pointing me to a carb issue or maybe a fuel line blockage. The tank was cleaned and recoated inside 2 yrs ago so seems like the prob shouldn‘t be a clog inside the tank.

I was thinking

1. unscrew the nut under the carb bowl and see if fuel comes out and what it looks like etc..
2. Unscrew the fuel line from the carb and confirm constant fuel flow
3. maybe take the metal (not see through) fuel line filter off and see if its somehow stopped up.

Any other thoughts on tests that might help point to the potential issue ?

Thanks !

(y) 1-2&3 should reveal the culprit. BTW,since you mentioned drain plug in bowl I assume it's an OEM carb. If you decide to replace (shouldn't be neccessary) stay with the same type because the cheapies on Ebay are junk.

It’s the carb that was on it when I got it 15 yrs ago and believe it’s the original since it looks ancient and the zenith replacement I tried many years ago didn’t work well, it would stall out under load. It’s been painted many times so not sure I can get part # , but thinking maybe a rebuild would do it if that’s the issue.

This doesn't sound like a need for rebuild,i think you will find a flow restriction as you suggested in original post. Model # is usually on a thumbnail size tag attached by one of screws holding carb together. Easly mis-placed while carb is disassembled.

Agree that it is a fuel flow issue, maybe something in the needle valve possibly. The carburetor is most likely a Holley.
