I have a 1967 Ford 4000 3 cyl. diesel tractor with a 540 independent pto that is leaking profusely out the pto shaft in the back. I have read where there is a snap ring that can come off and let the shaft slip back and tear the seal. Has anyone had this problem and what is the fix? I hear you have to split the tractor to fix?

If you get the IT manual they show this set up. If I am not mistaken you can remove the 4 bolts that hold it in (drain the rear end first and I think the hydraulic reservor also) and the whole assembly should slide out, it will be with the shaft like 3 feet long. The housing with the four bolts is where the snap ring is but you have to take it out and apart to service it. I think altho it been a long time that housing has a seal, a bearing and the snap ring and in order to get to the seal you have to remove the other two. The IT manual has some real good directions on how to get it out and apart, they have them at tractor supply can't remember the #.

Now the bad news! When I did my 841 (ealier version of yours) I couldn,t get it out I had to remove the hydraulic cover to get at the couplier that is at the rear of the transmission. Somehow the front of the shaft got peened over and it wouldn't slide out of the couplier I had to go in with a real small file and clean the end up inorder to get it out. There was a lot more to it but that is the basic's, need less to say it made a short duration project into a major time consuming pain in the back side.

Pain in the back side I heard that for sure. That would be sweet to get to it all from the back plate. Thanks for your reply.

I think I'm losing my mind. Did I reply to this earlier and my post is gone now or is this a different thread with the same problem?

Bought a '67 4000 many years ago - bad rear pto seal - made a hook device and hooked the seal, pulled it out - replaced with a new one and have put many many hours on the pto with no leaks.

the 3 and 4 cyl 4000's are very different. different procedure on the pto seal repair as well... OP needs to get a service manual for sure...

and yes.. this topic has been cross posted. I've seen it in other forums.

very confusing...

Never mind got it fixed, done it all from the back! Snap ring came off on the inby side of the bearing and let the shaft walk out and the outby snap ring ate the seal up. It was an easy fix, but there is a washer in the clutch pack that will fall and just cover the hole with the top side of the washer. I just put a little grease on the end of the shaft when going back together. Pushed and turned the shaft against the washer and it went right on in (like it had eyes! glad it did cause your doing everything by feel at that moment) anyway not bad, I gave it a #3. I bought a service manual on CD off of ebay for $10.89 (including shipping) it is very good you can print any page you want and you don't have to worry about getting your greasy finger prints all over it and stuff, it was most certainly helpful I would strongly recommend getting a manual. My only Question is what cause it to do this, The snap ring was bent like something pulled really hard on the shaft. I just had a finish mower on the tractor at the time and the shaft on in works in and out easily and has plenty of movement. After I got everything back together I went out and mowed some and watched everything and the shaft moves in and out a little just from the bouncing of the mower itself. Could this cause that to happen you think?

PS. Cost me $29.00 for two new snap rings, a seal, and a new gasket for the cover. The bearing was good.
