I've a 1964 Ford 4000 diesel tractor. The generator disintegrated and I replaced it with an alternator. Now, the red "charging" light in the instrument panel stays on all the time, which I'm told is normal in this situation. However, I'd like to come up with a solution to have the light work like it used to -- go out when it charging and come on when it's not charging. Any ideas? Thanks!

The separate voltage regulator controlled your indicater light, and its gone. If you replaced it with a 10si, which most people, do just run a wire from the spade connector on the side of the alt, probably has a black rubber plug in it to the wire that was on the ind. connection on the reg. if its its not the 10s1 (delco) post the make and I will let you know.

Gotta admit I don't know what the model is and I can't find anything on the alternator that tells me. Can you tell what it is from a photo? Next to the BATT connector is another connector under a rubber cap -- it's labeled simply "R".

FWIW, the old regulator is still up under the dash -- it was too difficult to get to to bother removing it!

Hi Farren, that is indeed a 10si, the terminal you are talking about is the output terminal for a tach. Right next to this you will see a rubber plug, remove this and you will see two spade connectors. attach a wire from the first connector to the wire that goes to your indicator light from the old reg, you're just doing what was done with the old setup only on the built in reg. This side of your light is the grounded side, to your reg. once the alt puts out power you have no ground and your light goes out. Try the second conn, if the #1 doesn't do it, there are a few that use the second terminal and like I said its only a ground so dont be scared to try both of them. good luck!

Thank you! I will put that on my to-do list and give it a try "one of these days".

If it is a three-wire alternator, you should connect spade #1 to the dash light. Spade #2 is for remote sensing of the voltage. Some just put a short wire from that spade to the alternator's "BAT" stud, but the correct connection is in the enclosed diagram:
The Delco 10-SI and 12-SI Alternators

I suppose the alternator in question is a one-wire alternator (since it seems to have been functional with the wiring in the picture), then spade #1 is for the dash light, spade #2 is of no use other than to make a connector fit:
