Planters Ford 4000 and JD 71 or 7100

Hello All.

I am new to the site.

I am a new owner of an old 1963 Ford 4000. I am looking to purchase a 2 or 3 row planter, i have been looking at refurbished JD 71 Flex Planters and JD 7100 planters for food plots and the garden. I will be planting 3-6 acres of soybeans or corn each year.

Anyone have opinions on the 71 vs the 7100?
Can I get by with the 71?

The 7100 is a bit more percise in setting seed depth and metering out corn seeds. If you were trying to make money growing top yield corn, I'd steer you that way.

For your needs, the 71 is a great planter, will do everything you want or need. As a plate planter, you will need to select the right size seed to match your planter plates, and likely have several sizes of plates to switch to different corn sizes. Not a big deal, but something to watch for.

Both are very good machines, in good repair either will do a very good job, both are found all over, parts for both are all over, etc.

For 3 to 6 acres I would go with the 71. I just traded a 2 row 71 for a 4 row 7100. The 71 was a good planter but we out grew it. If I wasn't using the planter for farming in addition to food plots I would have bought another 71. I know a 2 row 71 is about $1200 and a 2 row 7100 is about $2250 give or take. The 71 was a great sweet corn and deer plot planter. Plates can be bought at Lincoln Ag or E-bay is also a great source for them. Seed Corn bags will have recomended plate sizes on the bag. I used a small flat plate for sweet corn. Both are great planters.
