When I got my tractor, used, 4 years ago, there was an incorrect fuel cap basically just crammed into the filler tube. Fit not bad, for what it was, but was one of the first things I replaced with an OE fuel cap (exterior thread on fill tube).
Noticed a little while ago that the OE screws/washers holding the nylon disc onto the inside of the cap were rusting. (I get that the factory fuel filtration is designed for/capable of dealing with much worse than a few rust flakes off of small screws, this just strikes me as lame). Not sure if the original (1992) part was made with cheap hardware, but the OE replacement in recent years seems to be.
Replaced them today with Stainless steel screws/washers that I picked up at Home Depot. Used a magnet in the store to make sure that I wasn't getting regular steel parts that somebody had tossed into the wrong bin.
Ended up getting the SS washers out of a sealed factory bag, as they had a fair amount of magnetic attraction, but less than full steel.
1) Anybody have a favourite Canadian source for Stainless hardware ?
2) Any better way than a magnet for a field check of nickel content ?
