I've been lurking on this site for a couple of months now and have learned quite a bit! I've been looking at Ford 3000's but found a Ford 3910 nearby that is for sale. I was wondering if y'all could help me determine a fair value for it. He is asking for $8500. Here are the details:

  • 1985 with 3400 hours on it
  • It did not have a front end loader on it, but the owner just put a used one on. The loader is in fair shape.
  • Shuttle shift transmission
  • tires are fair to poor condition
  • The tractor has been sitting for about 10 years outside in the elements. Costmetically it has been fixed up, but mechanically there hasn't been much done.
  • The owner believes the clutch was replaced right before it was parked.
  • Needs new battery
  • It started up fine but after running for 10 minutes or so there was quite a bit of blow by.

$8500 is my budget for just the tractor. I've got a lot of implements to buy too. I will be using my tractor for a little bit of everything. I have 3 acres out front that I plan on plowing and discing this fall. I have quite a bit to bush hog and a food plot to maintain in the back. I honestly don't see myself using the loader much. I have a lot of trees to take out and haul out of the woods and I plan on getting a 3pt log splitter to cut quite a bit of fire wood. I also have a 500' driveway to maintain and it will need a lot of work up front.

What are your thoughts?

I think that is too much by a good margin. It would be a fair price for a 26 year-old tractor with good rubber, few apparent problems, etc., but not as you have described it. You could easily find yourself frustrated with $10K-plus in it. Are you in North Carolina? There should be plenty of good used tractors available. Keep looking.

That's what I was thinking. I just found a JD 2040 2wd with rops and fel with only 560 hours for roughly the same price. Comparing the two tractors it is a no brainer. From what I've seen on this forum that may be a tad high for a JD 2040, but then again, I've seen those prices all over the place. I've seen a JD 2040 with 3000+ hours going for $12k.

Yes I am from NC.

i am a ford guy and believe the johndeere would be the better deal not because the hours but because the 3910 is front axle is really to light for loader use the hours on the tractor is not to bad but for a loader u need to step up to the 4610 style also the johndeere should have a faster loader and has a heavier front axle

Thanks for the post! You're the second person to mention that to me so thinks for chiming in! I found out that the John Deere has a broken hour meter, but the dealer thinks it has about 2000 hours on it due to the work he had done. It has new tires and had the cylinders rehoned. Is $8900 a fair price for the John Deere with unconfirmed hours? I'm hoping the dealer will come down quite a bit considering I am buying all my attachments from him too. He said he has about 8800 in it, but wants it gone. It was transferred to his store for another customer, but that customer backed out.

i sold a 2155 which is basicly the same tractor but a few years newer back in the spring that needed the sheat metal touched up but had good tires and 950 hours on a working meter and no loader for 9500 i believe 8900 is a fair price if everything works like it should i like the johndeere up to the 55 series but just not as much as i like the fords in them year ranges but a 2040 is really a good tractor i have a 1020 with loader for sale right now that i wont take 7000 for because it has good tires and a complete overhaul so imo that is a fair price but i would be afraid to offer 8500 and maybe a little less since they wont it gone so bad

i would pass esp. if it has lots of blowby 8 grand is a lot to spend on a tractor needing an engine rebuild!
