ford 3400 holley carb rebuild trouble

I have a 3400 and rebuilt the carb. It has a Holley. Now it is smoking and sounds like it is running on 2 cylinders. According to the paper I got with the carb if the carb float has a spring on it to set it one height and if it doesn't set it at another height. It does have a spring on it so I set it at that . That being said with me changing that float would that make this engine run rich like it is and run like ****??

float , set correctly won't cause a rich run. you can make one flood out though.

running on 2 cyls usually is a ignition issue.. not fuel issue. ( unless you have it soo rich and flooded that you fould out a plug.. etc.. )

I put new plugs in. new points. checked spark at all plugs. good blue spark, checked compression 125,130,135. I don't know what else to do.

a carb can't select what cyls it feeds a fuel/air mix too thru an open intake manifold.... so missing on 1 cyl is NOT a carb problem.

i understand that but I said it was missing but it is fireing on all cylinders. It is not running right and is smoking black smoke.

this is what I read:

you need fuel, air, compression and spark at the right time for that engine to run.

air is pretty easy to check.

spark is easy to check

timing is easy to check

compression is easy to check

that leaves fuel delivery.

( ps ).. for the heck of it.. make sur ethe rotor is tight and not sloppy on the dizzy shaft.

I actually took filter out and ran without for a couple minutes and no change.
good spark on all cylinders
did not check timing
compression was good on all cylinders
I replaced rotor and cap and points
rotor is tight
I guess I will dive in the carb again.

them holley are real boogers.

you have to have the info from the tractor to get the exact right kit.

god help ya if the carbs been swapped from a different tractor.

Does anybody know what the float heighth should be????
