My dad just bought a ford 3000 tractor. it has an 8 speed trans, when you engage the pto it grinds and does not want to engage. seems to work fine when it is engaged. the lift hyd. cylenders need to be replaced, where can i find them? there is a small lever on the rh side of the trans what does it do?

I think the small lever on the right side of transmission is to select draft control or position control. When you are using a ground engaging implement like a plow or disc you can use draft sensing. It senses when the implement starts to pull harder and raises the hitch arms to maintain a manageable load on the tractor. When it is set in position control, the hitch arms will stay in whatever position you place them, this works better for grader blades etc. Position control is with the lever up in a vertical position.
If your lift cylinders are acting strange it might have something to do with the draft sensing. If you do need parts, I would assume a New Holland dealer can get what you need.

I'm not sure on the PTO engagement, If that tractor doesn't have live PTO, you may need to push in the clutch pedal to engage the pto.

Hope some of this helps. Steveguy

Ditto ont he clutch if it is not a live pto machine.

Post your model ID number from the trans bellhousing..

If the 5th digit is a 3 you will need to clutch.. if the 5th digit is a 4 it is independent.

Also.. when you say 'the lift hyd. cylenders " you are speaking plural here. Ther eis only 1(single) internal 3pt lift cyl. Or are you perhaps talking about external loader cyls?

In any case.. you can get the lift cyl rebuild kit at at places like your CNH dealer or
Discount Tractor Parts and Manuals for Older and Antique Tractors

If the cyl is not scored you can usually lightly hone it with a brake hone then get a new oring and backup washer ont he piston and be good to go.

The part number for the cyl assy with unloading valve is:

C9NN478F HYDRAULIC CYLINDER Cylinder Assy., W/Unload Valve, Replaces P/N C5NN478F, Includes: Ref. 11 thru 15, (Not Shown), Start Year: 01/01/1965

I'm not sure if that is still a good number from CNH.. if it is.. expect it to be a real hunk of change ($$$$).. I'd try to rebuild mine first.. or find a salvage / used one.. next.. and a new one as a last option..

In the attached diagram, part number '10' is the assy I am speaking of.

The lever you're referring to is probably the draft/position control lever. I'd suggest getting the original style owners manual as a beginner, then the service manual. These things are well explained in the manuals.

8-speed models were live power. (2 stage clutch OR independent) You might simply need a pto clutch adjustment.

What exactly is giving you the indication the lift cylinder needs replacing/rebuilding?

I would be guessing that you need a pto clutch adjustment and that the lever is for draft setting usually only used if you are using a mouldboard plough if you do not plan on using one set it to its uppermost position as for the lift cyl if you need a new kit for the 3pl check out bare co.com they have a great range of good aftermarket parts and also owner and repair manuals well worth a look we use alot of their parts in our machinery repair business here in aus and have not had a problem with their parts good luck :D

the loader frame lift arm clyinders are shot need to be replaced the loader is an aftermarker fosco. not a good loader. the lift clinders are tiny and only single acting I need to find good replacements hopefully used. the tractor has live pto but grinds when you try to engage. apparently ther is a clutch brake of some kind.

OK now! Now we're getting somewhere. In the original post, it seems most of us were under the impression you were talking about the lift cylinder that motivates the 3-point hitch. Apparently not the case. The cylinders on the loader may be available through a number of sources. I'd start with the easiest. Try Tractor Supply, Shoup, Valu-Bilt, ect....

The 3000 has no PTO brake. I owned one from new (in '72) until 3 years ago and replaced it with another used 3000. Very familiar with them. You have a worn PTO clutch that may or may NOT be remedied with an adjustment. Common occurance on 3000's due to their age.

What state are you in???

I traded in a '65 Ford 2000 with a Fasco loader on it. I think the dealer still has the tractor, and it's probably worth more to him without the loader.

It also had a 78", factory, monster snow bucket on it that was in pretty good shape.
