I trailed this Ford 3000 home after having bought it not running sitting in a paddock.

I fitted a new starter motor, some fresh diesel, cracked it over and it burst into life.
Very impressive for something that probably hasn't been running for 5 years.

I shut it off (by pulling on the stop fuel control on top of the injector pump) within a minute because the water pump drive belt was disconnected (generator was off).

I've now fitted the generator and hooked up the drive belt.

Have also swapped the brand new starter motor that I had borrowed and refitted my repaired starter motor.

Now trying to start again and it cranks over fine, but won't fire.

I'm heading into town to buy some engine starter fluid, but don't have any other ideas.
Suggestions are welcome.

I'd guess that the one minute of fame was due to fuel in the pump and lines. Then it ran out. If you crack the injectors, is there fuel or bubbles? If fuel, push it up to speed and roll start it. If bubbles, its not being fed any fuel. White smoke when you crank? (unburned vapor), No smoke (no fuel). I've seen 24V put on the starter to get more rpm to get some combustion rated compression.

Is the fuel shut off (under the tank) open??

I removed the fuel line to #1 cylinder (back of the engine) and cranked the starter, diesel jetted out nicely. Meanwhile engine actually coughed into life so I screwed the fuel line on quickly. A bit more fiddling and I figured out that the flexible hose between the air cleaner and the intake manifold had a pool of water sitting in the bottom of it which it was feeding into the inlet (that explains all the white smoke when it first started).
I've disconnected that hose (and drained it), and have left it sitting in my shed to dry out. With the hose removed the tractor starts and runs easily.
I took it for a short drive and it runs ok but it's apparent that the brakes are sticking so that's the next job.
No doubt brake repairs on a Ford 3000 have been well documented so I'll go looking now.

Thank you for your help.

Great news on your 3000.

They are great old machines, with a lot of low RPM torque for a 40 hp tractor.

Please be careful with the tire wheel removal-
those rear tires and wheels are heavy.
Mine 3000 is in need of a brake job, one of these days will have to get around to it...

Glad to hear the Ford is up and running good
