Long story, but I have an 8 speed live PTO trans out of a 3000 that is in good condition, but would need a few bearings and new seals. After looking up some parts online, it would cost less than $200 to rebuild the transmission. The question is, what should I do with it. I don't need it. What is the market for a rebuilt transmission? What is the market for individual transmission parts?

The problem with an individual selling something like a transmission as rebuilt will be that most buyers won’t know you or have confidence that the rebuild is sound. It will be of value only to the very few who tear up one of those trannys. If you had the flywheel and maybe a clutch, even just a clutch core, it could have value to someone wanting to convert away from transmission driven PTO.

I don't have a clutch or flywheel. Are you suggesting that I try to sell parts out of it? If very few people manage to tear up these transmissions, I would expect that even fewer would take the time or have the know how to fix what is torn up.

He's suggesting that me as a buyer will question your talent in regards to selling me a rebuilt trans that's worth the time it takes to install it.

Might be a profitable sale "as is" for me looking for parts to rebuild my own.

All hypothetical.

I am not necessarily telling you what to do. I am suggesting that you may be sitting on it for a potentially long time waiting for someone that A) has a need and B) wants to trust the skill set of an unknown individual. It’s a shame you don’t have a LPTO flywheel.

Exactly.

It is already disassembled. There were some bearings that were rusted, so that's why I took it apart. Overall though, that's really the only thing wrong with it. I may have a chance of overcoming the "talent" obstacle, if I could just get the perspective buyer to visit my farm. I think the scenery would give the impression that there must be some talent around here somewhere. LOL

Well, I think I know where I could get a flywheel. Would it be worth $100 to buy one to increase the number of potential buyers? I guess I should have asked you guys what to do with it before I took it all apart! I wanted to see what I had. I doubt many people will want a basket case. It seems silly to put it back together with parts that I know should be replaced.

Again, hypothetical.

The scenery at your farm has no bearing on your ability to rebuild a trans.

How much do you need to get for this trans?

I didn't pay anything for it. It was given to me to use for the case in my 4000. Problem is the cases are different. I made a deal on a 4000 case for 250, so I guess you could say it cost me $250.
