Hey all, need help here. I have a Ford 3000 diesel tractor. It will stall when I till my garden about 150ft as the engine warm up. It make a series of sound like sheet metal rubbing (similar to belt squeak, but metal) before it stall. Afterward, it's hard to start is if the motor barely turn over. If I wait 30 mins to an hour, it turn as normal and crank right up, then die again if I put it to use. I've changed both fuel filter and the lift pump, bled air, but not helping. Could my oil pump starting to go out and causing motor to bind or is my rod and shaft are shot? It does not make the noise when the motor is cold.

Sounds like a rebuild is in order. How many hours on the tractor?

Also, I would not try running it anymore till it is fixed.

Have you checked to determine if fuel tank is venting & fuel return line isn't plugged?

It almost sounds like your hydraulic system is dead heading, and the relief valve is operating, producing that noise you spoke of. When you immediately try and restart, the hydraulic system is still under pressure and causes excessive loading on the starting system. When left for a while, the pressure will bleed off and allow the starter to function with less load. This is sort of a wild shot in the dark, but might be worth checking out.

Jim, the tank is vented. I’m not sure how to check the return line, but I bled all three lines up to the injectors. Would that cause the sheet metal squeak sound when stall?

07wingnut, you might be onto something there. My lift is sluggish but it’s been like that for a few years. How would I know if my hydraulic is under pressure?

Mileage gauge broke when I got it a few years ago, so I’m not sure many. It sitting at about 6000 for 9yrs with me.

Tinky, do you have an idea of how many hours you use the tractor per year?

As for the hydraulics, 07wingnut could be correct. However, I would think you would hear the relief valve much sooner than you described. Also, if the relief is working, I don't see how it would kill the engine. Stranger things have happened though.

To test the hydraulics you would need to tap into the pressure line from the pump with a tee and use a pressure gauge. A 3000 PSI or higher gauge would be needed.

Either way the 3000 is a solid tractor and worth fixing! Let us know what you find.

K5lwq, no more than 50 or 60 hrs a year. The sound when it stall seems to be coming from the front of motor but definitely not the fan and shroud. I've changed the Radiator, water pump and still persisted. I will need to get more tools and gear to test out the Hydraulics.

You might pull the oil pan and you most likely will be able to see the issue. My fear with continuing to try stuff is that if it is a rod bearing, it can come apart and go through the block. Then rebuilding will be unlikely.
