got a 3000 8spd trans dual stage clutch. when using 6 foot mower the pto sometimes jumps out of gear . it doesn't always to it though i know the clutch is getting very close to needing replacment but dont think that would cause it to happen
any ideas would be good

go around back of the tractor with engine off. grab the lil pto stub and tug/push on it. very likely it has some in / out motion. if it does, etiher: the bearing is worn, allowing play, or the wear ring has slipped, allowing play, or a split ring has popped out and allowg clearances.. or of course I guess if the bearing arrier housing is broke.. that would do it to.

it's easy to pull and R&R the pto shaft.. I've don't just about every one on my pre 65 tractors .. in fact.. I need to do the one on my 3000 as well as it just developed a lil play.

the play allows the shaft to slide in and out and that walks the dog clutch out of engagement, and then the splines can chew up.. untill you ge the parts or assy to fix it ( seal, bearing, wear ring ), at least bunji the pto engage lever into full engaged, that way the splined sliding coupler can't back off the end of the shaft.. even if the shaft is moving for / aft a lil. keeps things from getting chewed up.

ps.. the pto shaft assy is easy to rehad.. just takes a handfull of parts.. ( 30$ or so? ) or about a 120$ new assembly.. etc.

Good read Chris:) I had the same ideas but have not done one yet. Bill (hooked on Hp ) might have a similar issue with his 1900. Can you the work it all from the rear of diffy without taking the lift cover off ? Probably the bearing can be done that simple.

A few pics is appreciated when you do get to do your 3000. It'll be good and useful info for all.

it could be that the pto shaft inside the tractor is twisted are the sliding collar inside it twisted

i noticed the other day when i had the pto selector out that the shift fork is worn so ive got a new one of those coming. i also think there may be a circlip missing off the pto input shaft
were the coupler goes on to it at the back of the gearbox.

i have pics from some other pto jobs. the 3000 with an 8spd is going to be functionally similar to doing one on a n, naa, or 00/01.. drain the sump.. or really.. pull nose deep in a ditch since that has a single rear sump.

pull 4 bolts on the rear... snatch out the pto shaft and bearing carrier.

if a split ring is out of a groove.. inspect groove to see if it has it's lip shaved off.. if so.. you should replac ethe bearing carrier or the split ring will ride out again.. though I have seen people put a blip of weld on there after putting ring back in, as it's a throw away at that point anyway.

otherwise, to seperate the carrier from the pto shaft, you remove the forward split ring, and tap the external stub end down on a piece of woos and the carrier and seal fall off the shaft and bearing. if bearing is good and slip ring has moved, a maul and a piece of angle iron will re-seat it..

a 1 5/8 socket works good as a seal driver for the pto seals I have done...

like i said.. not a hard job at all.

a past issue of the n-news magazine has an article in it dtailing a pto shaft R&R i did.

the magazine usually only links the last couple articles on their site, vs the print copy. since I've written another article since then that is the current one that are linking to.

I do still have the pic set at home onthe pc and can post them up sometime this week.
