Rebuilding the lift on my 71 3000 and just finished the two lift adjustments as outlined in the IT manual but not real confident they are correct.

First adjustment is in Draft control and you adjust the turnbuckle. The IT manual says for current model to set the control valve to 0.030 measured from the end of the bushing. I could barely get it to 0.2 which is listed for early models and then I'm not sure how many threads are actually engaged in the plunger. If I try to set it at 0.03 I run out of threads.

Next is the position control, same deal I am right at the end of the threads on the position control rod and couldn't quite get to 0.2, something close to 0.28

Checked and double checked the requirements for draft control lever, quadrant and lift arm positions and am reasonably sure they were set properly for each adjustment.

Guess my question is, does this seem right for 45 years of wear on the linkage or any ideas on what I may be doing wrong? Google came up with a thread where someone made a new threaded link that was a bit longer to get the adjustment in spec. Is this a common fix? I'm afraid I do not have enough threads engaged in the plunger and it will strip out after I have put it back together. I only want to do this once :)

I would get up with soundguy he's one of the best information source's for the older Ford's. He has lots of post on in the Vintage Section and I fee sure he can help point you in the right direction

Thanks for pointing out the Vintage section. Completely missed it and will keep it in mind for the future.

Went back over everything except this time with both the IT manual and the Ford manual. Think I discovered the problem.
The Ford manual says to set the Control Lever at 3.75" from the top stop, the IT book says to set it at 4 1/8" from top stop. If I adjust the draft linkage with it set to 3.75 running out of threads isn't an issue, big difference between the two Control Lever positions.

Also think my issue with the position linkage adjustment was not getting the lift arms blocked up high enough to be in the full down position. I now have plenty of threads outside the lock nut on the control rod.

Still not 100% sure it is correct but am going to go with it the way it is unless someone tells me different before I put the cover back on the tractor.

The "alternative" procedures for adjustment of draft and position control adjustments outlined in the I & T manuals will provide reasonably close results but only if you follow the procedures precisely and you MUST replace the cam follower pin and/or ram/cam beforehand it there is ANY wear in either.

Running out of threads on the turnbuckle when attempting to make these adjustments is the classic symptom of a bent draft control fork. BTDT.

Suggest you migrate to the Ford forum on YT for much better results.
