Hi Everybody,

My new-to-me '73 Ford 3000 started leaking rear-end hydraulic fluid after a bit of use. It has gotten worse every time I use it. Great...

After looking around these forums I am left scratching my head on which of the two fix actions that it will take to fix the leak. The leak appears to be from the brake cross shaft on the clutch side of the tractor. Most posts I read say all I have to do is remove the shaft, replace gaskets, bushings and maybe the shaft itself. A few other posts say I need to split her and do a bunch of stuff that makes me hate this thing and have me ready to set fire to the whole farm. Attached is a picture of where I believe the leaking is coming from. Can somebody confirm the way ahead for this repair?

Thank you!!!!!!

No splitting is necessary. Drain fluid and replace the bushings, seals & dust covers on both sides. Sometimes the bushings wear into the shaft so there's a good chance it will need to be replaced. While your at it, I'd replace the bushings in both brake pedals and clutch too. They're only anout $5 each. I always make my own cross shafts because they're crazy expensive for a piece of 1-1/8" 1018 mild steel.

1-1/8" steel for the shaft, how long is this shaft? I cant find this part in the diagrams but plan on making my own. I'd like to have all the parts on hand so she's not out of commission longer than she needs to be.

thanks again!

I have no idea how long they are. It's been a few years since I've made one. I just use a tape measure and add some extra to hold in the lathe. You'll need a woodruff key cutter too. If I remember, I'll look at it when I'm at the shop

I did it on mine. Parts from the local NH dealer. Pretty straight forward, no surprises.

The seals on mine started leaking and after taking it apart to inspect everything found only the bushings had some wear. The shaft was fine. When I replaced the bushings it was very tight but working it up and down several times it feels fine. Where the seals fit on the shaft it had no wear in that area and sealed it fine. When you take yours apart you may find the shaft is ok just the bronze bushings are worn. I just took all the brake pedal side parts off and slide the shaft out leaving the clutch pedal still on the shaft of course you have to remove some linkage on the clutch side but no readjusting is necessary putting it back together.

Thanks everybody.

I have it apart, for the most part. What's the best way to remove the bushings? They are stuck in the tractor body.

What determines whether the cross shaft needs to be replaced? Mine LOOKS okay...

Also, on the cross shaft, each side has a metal tab that sticks out and attaches to the brake and clutch pedal. I just noticed I broke one off. Is this a concern? Do I need to put it back and if so how?

Apparently I need to take a tire off to pull the cross shaft out all the way and I don't have the right size bar for the tire's lug nuts. So I'll pick one up tonight and resume tomorrow.

Thank you!!!!!!

Crawl under the tractor and measure it. Both ends are in plain sight.

This link to Messicks web site might help. They have quick accurate service and shipping also. I've ordered several parts from them. You might could find it less expensive but on small parts like this it ain't worth the trouble to me. On the diagram I would assume all you need to replace would be:

Item 31 - shaft seal. you'll need 2, 1 for each side
Item 31A - felt washer. you'll need 2, 1 for each side (keeps out dirt)
Item 32 - bronze bushing. you'll need 2, 1 for each side

Some of the clutch pedals and brake pedals also have bushings if they are sloppy on the shaft you might want to replace those. It's just certain ones that have these replaceable bushings.

On getting the old bushings out just pry out with screwdriver or something along that line. They just slide in.

The tabs you mentioned I'm not sure which you're talking about.

You'll know if you need a new shaft if it's sloppy with the new bushings. I guess you could measure it with a caliper if you wanted but with the new bushings more than likely it's fine. If it's good and tight then your new seals will last longer.
