Ford 3000
I have a ford 3000 gas with the 8 speed manual transmission. In the fall I parked the tractor and didn’t notice any issues. This spring as I went to start the tractor it will only start with the clutch pushed in. When I release the clutch it bogs and dies. The rear wheels are both free spinning, I have jacked the rear up and attempted to start and shift with no pressure to no avail. From the limited sources I have found the problem sounds like it could be being stuck in 2 gears. Is there a best way to remedy this issue? Any pictures or videos or links would be greatly appreciated.

If the 3000 is made like our 5600 there is a cover that the shift lever bolts too that when unbolted allows access to the shift rails.

Before doing that does it feel like you are changing gears with either or both shift levers? Will one of the levers shift into neutral? If yes does engine still bog down? I would suspect the 4 speed to be the most likely culprit but it could possibly be either.

The 3000 has a cover with the shift levers as well.

It feels like I’m changing gears with both levers yes, the high low on the right “feels like” I can shift to high low and neutral, the 4 speed selector does feel like it shifts to neutral but does not feel like it shifts simply to all gears. even when both shifters are in neutral feeling position I still get the bog down

If you are comfortable doing so I would take the 4 speed cover and look at the shift rails. If they are not in neutral position you should be able to slide them into neutral. Will engine now run with clutch released?

I know the knob on our “M” Farmall shift lever wore and I had to add a little weld and file into shape to prevent not shifting fully out of one gear before shifting into next. Your 3000 may require a little attention in that area also since it has probably changed gears a few times in its life..

I did pull the cover, I was able to move 2 of 3 rails easily, I believe i got them in line. what seems weird to me is the tractor rolls freely without the clutch being pushed in, when it is turned off. Once I start the tractor and release the clutch, it bogs and dies. I will try and change fluid and get some pictures tomorrow.

Rolling freely does point to this not being a tranny issue unless the input gear box is locked and output is free wheeling and working correctly. I do not know if Hi - Lo is connected to engine output or if 4 speed transmission is connected to engine output.

If you put 4 speed in gear will it roll? That should tell you (us) if that tranny is shifting.

Same with 2 speed hi-lo if rolling and you shift does it still roll?
