Are there any interal clutch adjustments on this tractor? I think it's a '73 or so with live PTO and the 8 speed if that matters. I can't find my book on it, but I know that I have adjusted the pedal position on the shaft before......I would rather pop the top cover and adjust if I can instead of splitting it and re clutching.

Thanks

Thanks guys. I was trying to avoid a split right now if I could. The mechanic that I have do most of my major stuff said that he thought he could adjust it through the shifter/cover plate on top, but wasn't 100% sure. I didn't know if I should load it up and take it over there and see if we can adjust it, or if I was better off getting the new clutch and planning on the split.

the shifter plate sets over the TRANSMISSION

the steering box sets over the clutch.

Wow, thanks for your kind words. My go-kart mechanic actually said he vaguely remember adjusting the clutch on one back in school without splitting it. He has had mostly Oliver & IH and hasn't worked on many of the small Fords. I misspoke yesterday since I was also looking up parts for the high/low safety switch which would require me to pop the shifter plate.

Thank you "whodat" for actually being helpfull.

if you wanna roll like that .. that's ok.

You said your mechainc thought he could adjust the clutch by removing the tranny cover.

I was warning you NOT to use a mechanic that thought that.

I was trying to help.

No problem. I will write down your username and NOT try to help you anymore.

sorry to have tried to help you. :(

PS.. to remove the steeirng box to get in there, you have to unbolt the tin, steering wheel and draglink arms... al in all.. only a lil less work than a split anyway... I'd vote for a split than a looksee... but don't take my advice.. It's obviously not what you want to hear...

Thanks you for your insight on splitting/adjusting. Your explaination of why it makes more sense to split and reclutch was very helpful.

PS...You have a vast knowledge of the early Ford tractors which is greatly appreciated. Making snide comments about someone skill level is not overly helpfull though. I could come on here and do the same in an area of my expertise, but I choose not to. I think that we all seem to forget on occasion that we do not have the same level of knowledge in all areas. Admittedly, I lack greatly in mechanical issues, thats why I have someone else take care of that. I was also at a 4 ring auction when I talked to him, I'm sure I only caught half of what he said.....the half that I missed is what you just explained nicely for me.

If I wsn't 95% sure that I could adjust a clutch thru the trans top cover.. i wouldn't tell someone I could. I wouldn't even hit at it.

The fact he hasn't worked on a ford in a while would make me doubly carefull about giving advice on one.

as far as that goes.. it's not common to be able to adjust a clutch from under the transmission shifter.. the tranny shifter sets over the gearbox.

there are some models that the tranny top and steering box base may come off together.. in that case, you could.. but the amount of work needed? it's just a few more bolts and wedges at that point to split, vs look.

my point was.. as a mechanic.. if he wasn't sure of the advice he was giving you, he propaply shouldn't have provided it.

you don't like my posts, I've got no problem bowing out of your thread.

i could adjust the fingers by removing the steering box all it is nine bolts a two fuel lines to electrical plugs and to tie rods, most of the clutch jobs i have done is because the screws on the end of the fingers where wore down because some one road the clutch not because the clutch was wore out

but i would have to agree with sound guy if money isn't real tight i would just split and and change the clutch, pp and bearings
