Hi, just joined up so thought I seek your opinions on the ford 3000 diesel, I bought awhile ago, that fumes badly out of the crank case breather.
Also needs ether to get going when cold. Figure it really needs a rebuild, but need to keep it going for awhile yet before that happens.
Is it possible to plumb the beather back into the intake to avoid sucking on the fumes? ie like a car engine pcv arrangement?

Thanks
Steve

Ether is bad. Stop.

Not advisable to plumb back into intake. Oil mist fumes from crankcase can cause run-on, which can't be shut down. Some large truck rigs have a intake block off valve to prevent the engine from substained running even after the fuel is shut off. The engine continues to run off the blowby from the crankcase. Sounds like a rebuild is closer than you would have liked. :(

Yes you could. It may not be too effective though.

IH3444, that is a good answer. It scares the crap out of you when an engine runs wild on its own oil and you cant stop it.

Just how bad are the fumes out the breather?

given that it likes ethere.. I'd say it's a candidate for at least a few internal repairs.. or you can try to re-route the blowby..

It dosnt fume when cold, but once the motor is hot there is quite alot of fumes & some oil mist coming out

IH3444 makes a good point, I hadnt considered the posibility of it running on.

rubber hose, pcv element, and B&S fuel twist-off valve... just shut down your pcv prior to killing fuel...

could get fncy and use a 'key-off' fuel solenoid to do the same automagically.

Oh it will stop, after either all the oil is used up from the crankcase, engine overheats, pistons lose lube and seize. So don't worry about it going on indefinetly......:D
