Found a guy around here selling a Ford 3000. Supposedly it runs great, but has a clunking noise in when moving. The guy thinks its the tranny. Also says the pto and hydraulics work. The hour meter shows 600 but he says he knows that is not correct, and is not sure of the year model. I think these models were produced between 1965 and 1975. He is asking 2,500 for it. Mechanically, I would do my own work so I wouldnt be to concerned with labor costs to fix the "noise". At that price do ya'll think this thing would be worth fooling with?

Not all the noises are created equal. can you elaborate on the nature of the noise, where it comes from, frequency of it, is it related to engine rpm, moving or non moving when the noise occur. 600 hrs is awful darn suspect specially adding " he knows that the hr meter is wrong".. Wow, what a revelation, what else is there that he knows?

LOL JC, yea the 600 is obviuosly wrong and he didnt suggest it was anywhere near correct, he just said it was like that when he bought it and has had it a few years. This weekend I will go check it out and see/hear the noise for myself (sorry I didnt mention that I hadnt heard it yet) I guess the main question I had was if they were good tractors when they worked correctly. 2,500 seems cheap. Im hoping it wont also kink up at the same time it makes the noise, that wouldnt be good. And yea, maybe he knows more about the noise or when/how it happened. I will repost when I know more.

I recently paid $4,500 for a 1973 3000 with a loader. Pretty good mechanical condition although may have do to some work on the front axel this Winter. Everything I have heard about them is pretty positive so long as you get the manual transmission.

2500$ is cheap for a 3000.. more like 4500$ - 6500$ here.

Clunk could be tranny gear missing a tooth.. ring gear/pinion missing a tooth.. bad bearing.. etc... need to narrow the poblem down.. however.. even if you stuck a grand in it.. price would still be in the 'steal' range..

Still havent been able to meet the owner to listen to the noise. But he did call, and I was able to ask a few more questions. He said if the tractor is sitting still, and you let the clutch out in neutral you can hear the noise. He also was unclear, but said that there were a certain pattern of gears that it wouldnt go into, like 3rd and 4th, possibly meaning one fork for two gears maybe or the tractor wouldnt move in those gears. I dont think he can really describe it..lol. Still trying to get the time to go over there. Dang hurricane ike screwed things up around here for awhile, been pretty busy.

Hmm.. are you saying it will shift between a couple gears.. but not others? 9 loose / broken shift forks ).

A noise in the tranny that is there, but disappears when you stomp the clutch.. if this is a single stage clutch model.. could be input shaft bearing.. or other trans bearing.. like mainshaft / countershaft.

This is probably delving into way more into RickB's knowledge area as I've never had a 3000 apart aside from the simple stuff like ignition and maintenance / service.. otherwise.. just sat on them to work with them... etc..

what trans it got?

Howdy soundguy. The tractor was behind a fence so I didnt get up on it. It does have one Shifter shaft though. Here is a closeup pic of the mid section. I think its a 4 speed. I also found a picture on the New holland parts area. There was only one tranny listed with one shift handle that I could see, and it lists it to be a 4 speed. Any ID on that would be appreciated. Thanks!

4 speed, transmission PTO, manual steering. Shifter problems, gear/bearing problems. I think he's $500-$1000 over the market on that tractor. I hope the rest of it looks better than what shows in that one photo. I'd want to make sure that's actually a 3000 as well. Could very well be a 2000; there were more 4 speed low-spec 2000's built than 3000's in that config. At least it isn't a gasser.

Post the codes from the bellhousing aft of the starter.. that will tell you whether it was a 2000 or 3000.. etc. Considering you can get a drop in trans for probably under 1000$.. you may still be ok.. IF the rest of the tractor is in good condition..er.. or better condition than the seat anyway!

Maybee just find a good running unit for a lil more $$ and not have to fi it when you buy it?
