I recently tried to start my 40+ year old Ford 2600 diesel during a period of freezing weather. I had to jump the battery to get enough juice to turn it over but when I did it fired up and within seconds there was a very loud clank-clank-clank-clank bell like noise from the radiator/water pump area and I immediately shut it off.

This week was warm. In the 50's. I started the tractor again and had no noise. I pulled it out of the shop to put more water in the radiator as usual. (It leaks water and always needs more when I run it). I was filling the radiator with a garden hose and it never seemed to get enough and then I noticed water/oil mix burbling out of a discharge pipe discharging near the bottom of the block near the front right corner. The pipe/tube originated from the cylinder head! I pulled the dipstick and water/oil came pouring up out of the hole! How is water getting from the radiator to the engine block and into the oil pan? Was the loud clanking noise my water pump going south? Did that open a hole to the block?

Water and oil pouring out of an engine block seems like a death knell.

Anyone have some words of wisdom for me?

Sincerely, Mike

What was the strength of the antifreeze mix in your cooling system before this cold weather event? If mostly just water you have completed the test for the effects of the expansion of water when freezing. Yeah, I know, COLD !!

Mostly water my friend.

It sucks, but the freeze probably caused the crack and the fix is pricey. You might be able to get it brazed depending. Give it a shot.

Agree, not sounding good of mostly water in a confined cast iron space, plus freezing temps...

Water, water everywhere. Probably a half gallon came out of the oil pan drain before the oil/water mix followed. It's a mess.

If your lucky, it could only be a head gasket that went,
the clank sound could have been water trying to be burned up in ignition fire.
I say this because you stated it always needed to be topped up with water.
Do a pressure test of the cooling system, "sometimes' you may see the leak by doing this.
