I have a Ford 2000 3 cyl gas tractor my dad gave me after getting a new shiny John Deer. The starter is bad and needs to be replaced. I can easily remove the outside two bolts, is there a third next to the engine block? I tried to feel around but big hands in small places doesn't work well. Is there a third bolt and how do I get to it?

Just so you know what's going on, Starter is dragging. Turn the key with a fully charged battery and the starter turns the engine, but very slowly. Starter also gets VERY hot to the touch.

Second question:

My parts store is saying there are two different starters available. A Ford starter or a Lucas. He says he needs to know which starter is on there. How do I tell?

As far as numbers on the tractor, this is what I have.
Tractor Serial Number C342266
Model B1023C
Engine 2B28A

Any help is greatly appreciated. I've spent several days looking through threads but nothing really helps. Hopefully one of you can come through.

On my 3500 diesel I have a Lucas. There is a third bolt. I took off the fuel filters and bracket and even the inline primer pump and fuel line to get the starter off.

My auto electric guy rebuilt it. Cleaning, bearing and armature brake fixed it. He said usually the leads on the armature are often melted. He recommended heavy gauge battery cables and an extra ground pigtails, which I had made up.

I would see if you can get yours rebuilt locally. My experience is you get a better product back form a reputable shop than buying new. Often cheaper, but usually always better.

the parts store is sying that they are a moron... sure.. there's 2 starters for a 2000.. becuse there is an older prior model 2000 and a 65+ 2000. the old style used the ford starter. I'd find a SMARTER parts store! In fact. I'd hav emy old starter REBUILT.

yes there is a 3rd bolt. Be glad you have a gasser and not a diesel. the fuel filter head is in the way terribly on a diesel.

get a couple extensions and a wobble end if you have it. you need enough extensios to work from t he back of the starter, to that 3rd bolt or stud. cuss a lil and it will come out.

lastly. DO check bat cables and conenctions. I like to ground the bat connetion right to a starter ear on many of them.

So if I were to buy a new starter, I would need the Lucas style starter, correct?

I am trying to find a reputable place to rebuild, but I'm not sure there is one I trust in my part of the woods.

Thanks for all of your help

looks like you have a 72.. that starter looks different.. but that isn't uncommon on an aftermarket. I have seen gear reductions that look way different.

add states 64-75 but the lil brief text states 65-69..

is it a 4.5" starter?
