I read quite a bit about rebuilding the manual steering box on the ford 2000, and attempted the job. Now the steering is giving me trouble one of two ways.
It either will not turn to the stops on the spindles, or the sector shafts have a lot of end play in them.
I tried adjusting them with the wheels as if i was going straight. I backed out the front shaft and adjusted the rear to have no end play. I then adjusted the front shaft to have no end play. With the front wheels off the ground I get about 1-1/4 turn out of the wheel in either direction. If I force it really hard I can get more. But i am no where near the stops on the spindles
Or I adjust them so I am able to get 2 to 2 1/4 turns out of them each direction. This brings the front end almost from stop to stop on the spindles, but i get quite a bit of end play in the sector shafts.
I am at a loss as to what is causing this, unless i need to try adjusting the end play in the sector shafts with the wheels turned to one direction or the other.
Anybody else have any suggestions?
