I have a old Ford tractor in the garage and it is either a early 2000 or 4000 Ford diesel. It would be the smaller older tractors (like the size of the 800 Fords}. It has a 4000 decal on it and has been repainted and stickered. The lady I am fixing it for said her dad had it painted and stickers put on it but was not sure if it was actually a 4000. So first question is there a easy way to tell by looking at it what model it is? Second it has not been ran for 10 to 15 years and there is no battery. Is there anyway to tell if it is 6 or 12 volt? it has a generator and not a alternator. I know that the gas tractors had a 6 volt system and believe they were negative ground?
thank you..............

I did find out its a 58-59 Ford 4000 diesel; found a number on block that verified it was the engine used in the 4000 tractor only. Still need to know if anyone can helpnme out with the 6 or 12.volt.

As for the positive or negative ground, check the battery cable terminals. The holes size should be a good clue. If the cable with the larger hole goes to ground then it is positive ground. If you can't come up with the factory specs I've been told you can hook a 12 volt battery to a 6 volt starter without hurting it. Or you can hook 12 volts to one of the lights and see how bright it is. After it's running check the generator output to see what voltage it's putting out.
Good luck.

No such thing exists. 4000s started in late '60 as industrial models and the series came out in '62. "officically" ended in'64' but there were still some 4 cylinder thousands in 1965.

To find the model number on a 1953-1964 tractor, look behind the starter on the flat spot just before bellhousing. There should be two rows of numbers. Top row is model number, ottom row is serial number. Report back and we can decipher for you. Also, this site is a wealth of information on the pre 1965 tractors. Change history '39-'64 Ford Tractors

How about a picture or two , is it a 3 or 4 cylinder and as far as having a generator, I know that they were standard at least thru 1967

as Cbrown9064 said - the #s on the right side, flat spot are needed...

Diesel were 12 volt neg ground so the generator was 12 volt. the numbers on the lower section of the block will tell you if it's a 144 (2000) or a 172 (4000) also will have a date code there. Tractor numbers on the flat spot on the bellhousing behind the starter above the two holes.
BTW 144 parts are getting harder to find.

ditto what has been said.

in late 58 ford came out with the diesels.

for it to be a straight ag 2000 / 4000 it would have to be a 63/64 could be a industrial starting in about 60.

what's the bellhousing casting aft of the starter say? ( sometimes acid pitting wears it ).

in lieu of that. the block casting number.. if it ID's a 172 ci engine. check date codes. if the rest of the tractors date codes are within 3 months or so .. then the entire chassis is probably intact. don't go by tin.. though posting a pic may help.

as said.

all diesels are 12v negative ground

I can't find a serial number on the flywheels housing behind the starter. I cleaned the area and can't see any numbers. Found the number 310609 on the rightside of block and 310363 on the rearend housing. Have no way to post pictures at this time but looks just like a 800/861 ford. Hope this helps and thanks for all the info. At least I know what battery to get and hopefully we can figure out model and year.

The engine number is from a 172 1958 to the middle of 1959 engine. In late 1959 the engine number would be different. This would make it an 801 series. What trans does it have, a 4 speed, 5 speed, or select-o-speed (10 speed)?

Kirk; this has the 5 speed transmission. I didn't know that the 801 series had a diesel engine; good to know. That's what I like about the old tractors always something to learn. Thanks for your help.
