This is by far the best forum on the net for tractor information. Thanks for making my life easier. Thus far I have been able to find a thread to answer my questions but this time I have come up empty. Thanks in advance for any/all advice.

Tractor: 3cyl diesel Ford 2000 8 speed w/ live PTO

Problem: Clutch release very high, PTO sometimes grinds when engaging, Gears grind occasionally, brakes not functioning very well (related?)

Question: It seems obvious that I need a clutch job but my question is should I get it done and is $1400 a fair price for rebuild?

Background: Bought tractor for 5k and it came with a flail mower and trailer. I have been toying with the idea of buying a Mahindra (maybe 3535) with a loader for better maneuverability and overall functionality, but don't really want the payments. I've had this tractor for +/- 18 months and never had to do anything but put fuel in it and change fluids once. Power steering never worked but I thought about rebuilding the pump. Never runs hot, hydraulics don't leak down, starts with turn of key, tires are good, lights work, etc.

Have you tried adjusting the pedal? You don't say anywhere your clutch is slipping. If the engagement is very high, maybe it's not disengaging. May not need a clutch, just an adjustment, much less than $1,400. Free if you do it yourself.

i'd adjust pedal freeplay to correct amount.. or a hair under. if pto still grinds sometimes to engage.. clutchmay be past it's usefull life.

brakes may be worn.. have you adjusted them.. simple mechanical brakes. or are they oily from leaky seals?

any oilleaking from bellhousing?

when you do clutch.. do input shaft seal. and all the other stuff like throw out and pilot bearing.

sounds like half the bill is labor. Not a great deal.. but not uncommon from what i have seen either..

alternately you could split her...

Brakes I can do with minimal trouble, I was just curious if they were somehow related to clutch because both problems seemed to materialize around the same time. No visible oil leaks so you guys are probably right; simple adjustment. I bought the tractor with the intention of doing the repair work myself but splitting her as my first real mechanical undertaking is, to be honest, intimidating. I've been putting off the power steering pump rebuild for months for the same reason (that and it's been run dry for who knows how long, so I'm happy in the delusion that all it needs is a rebuild). I know just enough about turning wrenches to get myself in trouble, but I'm a believer in learning by doing so I suppose it would be hypocritical NOT to do it myself. On the other hand; it sure would be nice to have someone available who knows what they are doing to bail me out if need be. (If only there were a group of knowledgeable people I could turn to for help with just a few keystrokes!) I'll research/try the pedal adjustment first and let you guys know if it works. I hadn't considered it, mainly because the mechanic at the local dealer steered me toward clutch job right away when I described what was happening. If it doesn't.... well lets just hope it does.

You're getting good info here.

Brakes are dry shoe and drum. If the shoes aren't worn completely out, you should be able to adjust them so that they work. As already pointed out, the exception to that is if your wheel seals are leaking.

The clutch is a little more complicated. Maybe someone can post the proper adjustment procedure. Try that first.

unfortunately on those dual clutches.. externally.. pedal freeplay is about the limit..

So long as you have a good level and hard surface to work on splitting a 2000 ford and replacing clutch is not bad job at all even for a novice mechanic. Be sure to block front axle pivot point on both side bottle jack under trans good two ton floor jack under engine then it is just nuts and bolts. Power steering might be a different story I would fill pump and see where oil was going to, the older fords had seals in steering column that would get bad and all the oil would pump out, this was caused from people using the steering wheel to pull themselves up on the tractor. Has been years sense I worked on one but really nothing on the 2000 a guy with the basic tools and a little time could not fix.
