Ford 1920
Hi

We are looking at buying a Ford 1920 off a local machinery dealer here in the UK to do light work on our farm. It has run about 4500 hours, is fitted with a locally made loader and backhoe and is generally in pretty tidy condition. We think it is maybe burning a little oil, and there is oil weeping from the outer seal on one of the rear halfshafts.

The dealer says he has replaced the seal but we are not convinced that he has. We could do the job ourselves in our shop but I am struggling to find anyone in the UK who has stock for this type of spare. The loader and backhoe will be easy to get parts for, it looks like the engine has service kits available as it has been used in lots of equipment, and stuff like the clutch and electrics look OK but the transmission/back end looks tricky.

What is the general availability of spares like in the USA? I don't want to acquire something that is simply not supported any more, and while I would probably look to source heavy items from here (reconditioned or from breakers), getting things like seals from overseas (if available) won't break the bank.

Any help or advice welcome!

Welcome aboard, ukrich! I have been getting most of my NH 1920 parts from Messicks, and most all of the TBN members give them high marks, as I do. Here is a link to their NH 1920 page with very helpful parts diagrams included. New Holland (192) - 4 CYL COMPACT TRACTOR 2 SERIES (1/87-4/2) Parts Diagrams. Messicks employees frequently post helpful advice on TBN. I would not hesitate to order parts or call them for advice.

Good luck with your new-to-you tractor. My 1920 has been rock solid, but it had only 700 hours on it when I purchased it in 2011.

Thanks for this - the Messicks site is very useful indeed and has confirmed that if we really can't source an oil seal locally they carry stock - and they ship overseas.

I am not sure how many of these tractors were sold in the UK but they appear to be rated very highly by owners - as they are on this site - so hopefully once we sort things out we will have something that lasts a long time. It had better do this - it is replacing a 1957 Fordson Major which we bought in the 1970s, which at that time replaced a 1936 Massey Harris!
