Help! How do I engage the PTO on a 1993 (?) Ford 1720 without grinding the gears? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You should already be at relatively slow RPMs, like something in the 900 to 1500 range, and then push in the clutch. With the clutch in, engagement should not involve any gear grinding. If there still is, the clutch pedal may need some adjustment, but that would be a suprise to me unless you have more than 1000 hours on the tractor.

I'll check that. Tractor has over 2000 hours on it. Any hints on adjusting the clutch?

Great to hear. The 1720 is a really nice machine, supposedly one of the most popular subcompacts of the late 80s thru the 90s. Hope it serves you well.

Now that you have solved your PTO problem, I hope you can provide advice on my issue.
I have a 1720 which has had a hard life as a shopping trolley retrieval tow machine.
I suspect the PTO has never been used and I am trying to figure out how to activate it.
I have moved the lever to all settings , both with the motor running and not running and the PTO shaft freely spins wherever the lever is placed.
When I look down through the hole on the top of the box (usually plugged with a rubber bung). I can see that the internal shaft spins in sync with the outer shaft in some settings and stops spinning at other settings, even though the outer shaft is turning.
Can you give a novice simple instructions on how to activate the PTO. I hope that I am just not doing it correctly and that it is not just a broken machine.
Would welcome any advice fellas.

I found the advice to adjust clutch "1/2 inch to be exactly correct. My 1720 pto goes into gear with no grinding after I did the adjustment. Thanks for the advice. The repair was successful and had no expense. I am enjoying my first experience with tractorbynet. My best to you who have problems in the future. I will certainly go to this site first when I have a problem. Thanks, JA Patrick
